Going to a big conference on Tuesday..

Going to the AAFS (American Academy of Forensic Science) conference in Denver this Tuesday. Not sure if I should shave my head or not. Right now my hair is about 5 cm long which is pretty long for me, but I'm thinking of growing it out. I like it long like this, but I'm worried since it's in that 'in-between' phase that it might look a bit unprofessional. Thoughts?

    5 cm is not long.

Either go to a stylist or shave it if you're worried.

It's long for me. Usually I keep it at about 0.5 cm.

Long hair is not professional? I am a lawyer and have worked as a law professor and I have hair that is braided and hangs to my ass. It's been that way for most of my life. Keeping it neat is the main thing.

Yeah, but professors are allowed to be hippies.

And also I don't think this is a serious thread.

Are you a Forensic Scientist or an aspiring Forensic Scientist? If the latter and you plan on networking at the conference, I'd say do what makes you feel comfortable. It sounds like that is shaving to .5cm.

Roll with what you feel comfortable in, I got longer hair and I just pitched Bayer last week and the execs in that office were all across the board with hair style and dress. IMO, I think clothes is more of an indicator of who is professional and successful then hair style and who is taking things seriously.

It's not so much about the hair necessarily, it's how you're groomed. I've been told by prospective employers that I have a very professional appearance when I clean up even though (at the time) I had a 3 inch long goatee, 5 inch sideburns, and hair halfway down my back. The only thing that's changed is hacking back the facial shrub.

I keep myself well maintained so, though my appearance is non-mainstream, I still show that I care enough to try. If you don't brush or wash your hair and it looks stringy, greasy, dirty, and all dreadlock-y, you won't be taken at all seriously.

Exactly. It's all about being well groomed. Besides the fact that my hair is just too long when it's not braided, keeping it pulled back makes me look business-like atleast from the front and from behind people don't mine the braid much. I wont lie and say people dont sometimes look down on me for my hair but most people dont care as long as it's well kept.
