# Thread: An Utterly Stupid Question...

1. ## An Utterly Stupid Question...

This is bound to have everyone sneering and muttering things under their breath...!!!

If for example one performs a benchpress with the bar (20kg) and a further 20kg on either end of the aforementioned bar, has that person just benched 40kg or 60kg???

Don't blame me - it's the Russian weather!!!

2. 60kg

3. :withstupi

4. Cheers chaps - makes my stats seem that tad less pathetic!!

5. 60kg. +/- 5kg depending on wind resistance.

6. Beat this. This was actually told to a friend of mine by a qualified fitness instructer. He was told that if you are lifting a weight which is perfectly balanced on the bar with its weight perfectly distributed then the bar ceases to weigh anything.

So according to this guys logic you could lift a car with a piece of string if the cars weight was evenly distributed on the piece of string.

This guy was actually being paid to give out this kind of info

7. lol, sounds interesting...

Newtonian mechanics.
Weight=Mass X gravitational acceleration.

Unless you lift in the absence of gravity, the bar weighs what the bar weighs.

maybe it was dementia brought on by too much Smith Machine lifting?

10. That'll do it every time.

11. so if you place barbell...

firmly on the rack......

evenly spaced either side........

with an equal amount of weight on each end....

It should technically hover?
