The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Soviet Periodization

Here's an excellent article by Tom Myslinski off of elitefts.com regarding Soviet periodization schemes:

Requires Adobe Acrobat. Its 40 pages, but a damn good read.

I don't have time to read this right now (it might be bathroom material tomorrow at work), but do the Sheiko Routines follow the same principles and ideas?

Most everything from the Russian and old Eastern Bloc countries follows at least some of what's in there, Sheiko included.

Westside especally draws on a lot of it.

Have you used Sheiko? All I know of it is what I've read in some posts on MFW. It seems like its based around increasing work capacity, and a ton of volume near the end of the cycle. I'm curious as to the research or reasoning behind it.

Matt I've been to the world powerlifting site and I've seen the structure of the Sheiko routines. I'm looking for an article or resource as to they why's behind the program. Why so much volume? What is the reasoning for the cycling it uses?

I've read some of the article from the elitefts site, and some of it is making sense...maybe the rest of it will explain more.

The Sheiko routines listed on that site are all for the preparatory period.

Prep period is generally a time to break the body in and begin to get it accustomed to higher working loads, which I'd guess is the idea here. The training %'s never go above 80%, and only rarely go above 70%.

I've yet to see any of Sheiko's routines for later on in the training cycle, but high-volume and low-moderate intensity is a staple of preliminary routines; the Soviets were a big fan of raising working capacity, and this is simply an extension of that.

I started reading it yesterday - awesome stuff.
    Squats work better than supplements.
"You know, if I thought like that, I'd never put more than one plate on the bar for anything, I'd never use bands or chains, I'd never squat to parallel or below, and I'd never let out the slightest grunt when I lift. At some point in your lifting career (assuming you're planning on getting reasonably strong and big), you're going to have to accept that most people think you are some kind of freak." -Sensei
