    Barbell Shrugs - Which Way???

    I prefer to do dumbell shrugs, but Coach made us do some barbell shrugs today (I'm on the college's powerlifting team). When I do barbell shrugs, I always have the bar behind me. I read that it targeted the traps more, & I just personally like behind-the-back shrugs as opposed to doin them in front. Feels more comfortable.

    Now, Coach wouldn't let me do them behind-the-back. He said something bout it wasnt no better than the other way & put unnessary strain on my spine. I really trust & respect Coach because I've really gotten bigger & stronger while training under him in the past year. HOWEVER, I still feel more comfortable shrugging with the bar behind me, & I'm able to do a good bit more weight that away. We normally shrug with dumbells, but what do y'all think of the barbell shrugs? Which way?

    Behind the back shrugs or shrugs with the bar in front?

    I don't see how it would matter much, and certainly don't see any difference in spinal loading.
    Squats work better than supplements.

    If you are powerlifting I'd definetly do them from the front. That is the final position for the deadlift lockout, so you may as well train your muscle to be strong from one of the positions you will have to achieve.

    I do them to the front. Ideally, you'd use a trap bar, but there's nothing wrong with doing them to the front.

    Behind the back shrugs are a great shocking tool for your traps.

    Just make sure you use a lighter weight and focus on form.

    Thx for the replies guys. I asked him to explain a lil further today. The main reason he wanted us doing them in the front was (like ElPeitro stated) because of the deads we're doing. It will help at the lockout. Geuss I'm just gonna have to get used to doing them in the front.
