I am just starting in weight training. I know some guys who are quite a bit smaller but stronger than some real big guys. this is really what i want (strength over size) and I would like to know the basics of how to achieve this.
squats, deadlifts, and olympic lifts will give you more strength and better speed than strict isolation exercises. for a beginner though, diving right into max lifts and whatnot is just asking to get hurt... so what i would do personally is take a month or two and do a routine like WBB #1 on the main site to get your whole body bigger and stronger. once you have a decent base you can get into moving some big weight, but starting right out with too much could definitely be harmful
