    Does anyone visit the Chiropractor?

I was wondering if there could be any possible benefit in lifting from visiting the chiropractor. This summer i've been working at the local pool and one of the other lifeguards was raving about how great it was to visit the chiropractor. Personally I've never been to one, but due to my severe oshgood (sp) slaughters disease in both knees, I have been curious if they could offer me any help, possibly in leg exercises. Recently I have noticed that my squat form is getting sloppy at higher weights.

Does anyone have any experience in this matter?

anyone who hands out bent pens in the mall and offers "free first time examinations" does not interest me. these hacks have never been to a real medical school. i'd rather go visit a witch doctor.

It just so happens that my Chiropractor has gone to a real medical school, and is an expert in human phisiology, as well as canine phisiology. It is a true medical position. By saying that Chiropractors have not gone to a real medical school is blasphemous, and is almost like implying that they do not know what they are doing, and that real results don't actually happen. If you knew anything about the human bone structure, and how it relates to the rest of it, then you would realize that chiroprators are real doctors. I had a chronic headache problem, it turns out it was due to the positionaing of my neck, other medical doctors obviously could not fix that problem, but a chiropractor did. A bent pen signifies nothing, bringing that up only illustrates your immaturity.

Oh yes, just so you know, according to my own chiropractor, you have to go to a real medical school first, and learn about human phisiology, and then to a chiropractic college.

Just like anything, there are good and bad Chiros. We had one posting here for a while.

I go to a chiro, and credit him with allowing me to continue lifting, and allowing me to live pain free.
    Squats work better than supplements.
"You know, if I thought like that, I'd never put more than one plate on the bar for anything, I'd never use bands or chains, I'd never squat to parallel or below, and I'd never let out the slightest grunt when I lift. At some point in your lifting career (assuming you're planning on getting reasonably strong and big), you're going to have to accept that most people think you are some kind of freak." -Sensei

    ADebar:
your ignorance is appalling. Chiropractors are specialists in maintaining the spine. Just as the optometrist specializes in eyes, or the dentist in teeth. Jesus, you might as well say that optometrists or dentists aren't 'real doctors' either. Each has their own specialty. As Xg74 says, chiropractors are very well educated, particularly about the spine and nervous system. Have you studied ANY anatomy? Did you know that virtually EVERY nerve that goes out into your body connects through the spine? But chiropractors aren't 'real' doctors. They spend most of their 4 graduate degree years drinking beer and laughing at all the people they are going to rip off. Oh yeah.

I would hardly ask my chiropractor to remove my gall bladder. But back pain, neck pain, headaches, etc.? I'd check with my chiro first -- I'd much rather get some adjustments and get free from pain and get my body functioning properly rather than go to my MD, get recommended for orthopaedic surgery and spend thousands of $$ and months rehabilitating. Or better yet, have them prescribe me some Tylenol-2 to mask the pain, so that my back can continue to degenerate until I NEED sugery. Now let me be more clear and open-minded than you appeared to be in Adebar's post -- I'm not saying all MDs overprescribe, or that they recommend unnecessary surgery. But in my opinion it's incredibly irresponsible not to investigate a non-invasive treatment like chiropractic to relieve some of these problems BEFORE going in for surgery or starting a course of drugs that simply mask the pain (but do nothing to correct the problem!!).

Oh and the bent pens? Chiropractors usually have to work harder to promote their practices for the very reasons embodied in your sneering ignorance, Adebar. Beyond ignorance and misinformation in the public, chiropractors must contend with certain factions in the medical community that are scared of chiropractors because they represent lost revenue in the form eliminating the drugs and surgeries mentioned above. They'll even hasten to jump on any technique or idea in chiropractic that isn't exhaustively researched and documented before being tried. Because EVERY procedure that MDs use is documented and researched and completely legit and necessary. Like circumcision. Right.

    Coolbeans:
My wife is a chiropractor, and she actually has Osgood-Schlatter's as well; she was a figure skater and repeatedly strained the patellar tendon both through skating and through overdeveloping her quads. Really though, chiropractors tend to be better at diagnosing and helping with spine-related issues.

Anyway, from what I've learned through my wife's experience, if you're old enough to be lifeguarding you're probably screwed... from what we've learned, the only real cure for O-S is to rest the body while you're still growing. If you're still growing, the best cure is rest and ice. Take the rest of the summer off from strenous sports, lifting, etc, and give your patellar tendons time to heal. If you're already done your growth spurts, then odds are you're stuck with it. Rest it as much as possible and ice it after you lift/exercise. There may be surgery options down the road, but these may or may not work.

Just to illustrate the knowledge that some chiropractors do have, mine actually diagnosed my torn muscle. Hel felt around my forearm and came the the conclusion that it was torn, lo and behold it was indeed torn, but only slightly.

Great for helping alleviate back pain, neck pain and plain old tension headaches....sometimes a simple adjustment and I'm a new man in 5 minutes. I personally think it's great thing when a simple office visit can relieve pain without medication....it's always worth a try in my book.

umm chiropractors don't have to go med school, so they really aren't real doctors, they have to go to schools of chiropractory(sp.) What they do has no basis in science, so they can't be called MD. There is no scientific evidence to back up what they do. Most of the pain alleviation is caused by the massages they give.

On the other hand, many people SWEAR by them, so who am I to argue.

Not cracking on chiros, but there are FACTS. Not mindless insults.

    chiropractors don't give massages?

they usually just readjust your spine. and spinal re-adjustments do work.

Most State boards require at least 2 years of undergraduate education, and an increasing number require a 4-year bachelor's degree. All boards require completion of a 4-year chiropractic college course at an accredited program leading to the Doctor of Chiropractic degree.
    From here:
    http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos071.htm

Not a medical doctor but they have to have at least 6 years of schooling and in most cases now, 8.

Like other health practitioners, chiropractors follow a standard routine to secure the information needed for diagnosis and treatment. They take the patient's medical history, conduct physical, neurological, and orthopedic examinations, and may order laboratory tests. X rays and other diagnostic images are important tools because of the emphasis on the spine and its proper function. Chiropractors also employ a postural and spinal analysis common to chiropractic diagnosis.
So they actually do all that stuff and they aren't just come hack. Do a little bit more learning dude.

i've been visiting chiropractors for the last 10 yrs and will continue to go until i die. most pre-existing back/neck/hip problems are only aggravated by intense, heavy, continuous weight training and other sports. i can pretty much attest that without my periodic adjustments, i would be in pain just walking let alone trying to train like i have. in fact, i love chiropractors so much, i am diligently trying to find a single, bb chiro that i can marry. and i am completely serious. my life would be perfect if i was adjusted every morning and every night!

I'm going to assume you're 'honestly ignorant' and not simply a troll with a hate-on for chiropractic

do a cursory search on say, medline for studies on chiropractic. Pay special attention to the many clinical trials with strict controls dedicated to establishing (and validating!) the efficacy of chiropractic

the initial studies way back when focused around low back pain but the current range of study is focused on everything from reduced stress to eliminating gastric upset to a hundred other things. One of the most interesting current projects, for instance, involves the renowned Dr. Candace Pert, in which one of the angles being researched is observing the impact of chiropractic on neuropeptides to help explain the emotional responses some people get from chiropractic

nejar: I suppose in your world, someone who is a doctor of chinese medicine or a naturopath is also 'not a real doctor'? If your worldview is truly so narrow, you have my sympathy.

i am willing to forego physical, mental and emotional attributes for a single, practicing chiropractor. massage therapists don't count.

btw - on a serious note, i remember a case history my very first chiro told me about. he had an unbelieving, but exasperated woman visit him after spending several years exhausting every other clinical specialty. she had some sort of internal or urinary bleeding (can't recall exactly) that NO ONE could stop. after 2-3 visits to this chiro, the bleeding was significantly reduced then actually stopped with more follow-up. as has been stated, all nerves in your body meet or stem from the spine and one small misalignment can pinch or disrupt the communication to a specific area in the body causing a myriad of problems that most people don't even correlate together.

have you hugged your chiropractor today?
