Stress and the effect of cortisol on overall body comp.

Does anyone have any relevant articles or studies that relates the everyday stresses of life (work, school, marriage, etc.) to cortisol production? Also how much does this cortisol production affect overall muscle hypertrophy/body composition? Any insight would be appreciated.

Also supposedly chicks produce crazy cortisol. Thats why they usually gain weight/look bloated when stressed, supposedly not as bad for the dudes according to a friend.

This article at Think Muscle has references to relevant research at the end.

Not sure it will help you with the everyday life part though.

    It says:
    "Sugar & Cortisol
According to John Yudkin, MD, two weeks of consuming a high-sugar diet can increase both insulin and cortisol levels.
His research shoed that fasting insulin levels increased 40% and cortisol levels shot up 300-400%."

So does this mean that the insulin spike created with a postwork out shake actually increase cortisol levels more?

Insulin and cortisol antagonize one another.

Fasting insulin level means just that...fasting.

Cortisol output can create all sorts of physical and emotional problems. Stress of any type on a physical or emotional level causes an increase in Cortisol as well as DHEA they counter each other. The main problem is caused with prolonged stress of either type. The level of DHEA begins to drop and the level of cortisol output remains high. The ratio between the two is the health factor, so as the DHEA output drops the bad affects of cortisol become the over riding factor. This can slow muscle gain and even cause muscle loss as well as skin becomming less elastic or getting wrinkles, in general the visual aging process.

Would seem easy to just add a DHEA suppliment but this has really had no good long term studies. It is known that if taken for an extended period it can cause the adrenal gland to stop producing.

Best bet: if you are having infections, imune system problems, swollen or sore joints and a whole meriod of symptoms, you should get a saliva test done and see the ratio between the two.

I have been looking around and have been unable to find any type of information regarding everday stress as it affects overall body composition muscle hypertrophy. I realize that this would be something that would vary from person to person and finding a solid answer, might be difficult.

Each individual responds to stress in different ways, so I am sure that this would have a bearing as well. Feel free to think outloud, I would be interested to hear others thoughts on this topic as well.

Thanks for the repsonses thus far.

    Here's something pretty cool:

Fish oil prevents the adrenal activation elicited by mental stress in healthy men.

Thanks to this thread I just learned that migrating birds with appreciable fat stores are not stressed by long distance endurance flights. Cool.
