    zero tolerance

This is nuts. I've seen similar things with weapons but not with drugs. Basically a girl got expelled for a year for having advil.

I'm all for drug laws, but can't we draw the line beyond over-the-counter stuff?

It's all about the slippery slope. Once one seemingly small thing is allowed, it just continues to get worse and worse until we have no rights and stop being called citizens and start being called civilians.

    You know what he means.

And in case you don't, he's referring to the transition from a free state to a police state - something which is rapidly happening across the world.

I knew what you meant more the first time. Either way not a great analogy.

That's the dumbest crap I have ever heard. The school board needs to get their head examined.

Zero Tollerance is the worst type of policy. It is sterile and inflexible. When I was in Hich School, a guy practically raped my girlfriend outside of school, then he immediately told the school office that I had been threatening to kill him and that she was harrassing him. So the school and the police told us to leave him alone. If I had touched him or anything I could have been suspended or expelled. So basically he got no punishment for doing a terrible thing.

This same guy was suspended for 1 week, that's right, 1 week for having a 'to kill' list of people at school and repeatedly threatening to bring guns to school and shoot people the year before.

    Zero tollerance my ass.

Zero tolerance is the same right-wing tough on crime BS that lead to the Rockerfeller drug laws and other nut jobs abrogating civil rights. God damn self-righteous moralizing bastards. Discuss.

I agree that this is a very stupid enforcement of a poorly worded policy, but I don't see how the U.S. is turning into a "police state"(I assume you were including the U.S.) Here we're in the age of "Do whatever you want and have a sleezy attorney make sure you're not held responsible". Consistently people are turned away from court with reinforcement that they don't have to worry about taking responsibility for their actions and I think it will only get worse. No matter how strict our laws are worded you can get away with anything when you have an impotent court system like ours.

    Okay that was off topic........sorry.

    That's part of the problem.

A weak court system means that laws have to be enforced by another branch of the government/military/etc.

In this case, it's the police.

Aside from that, laws are being passed every day that protect YOU from YOURSELF, as well as completely invade your privacy and trample your rights. Is that just?

And the hell of it is, you're not allowed to complain about the government anymore. Sure, you can sit around the table in your own home and complain. Oh wait, the Patriot Act gave the government the right to set taps whenever they want. So they could even listen to your conversation in your home.

So let me get this straight. The 1st Amendment just got shot down, and the government can spy on you legally? How does this relate to the school's decision? I don't know!

Good point. But, what I was saying is that police enforcement doesn't mean anything unless courts back it up. I can arrest all the people I want for various crimes and although every person on god's green earth (except those who believe the 10 o'clock news) knows they're guilty beyond a resaonable doubt, odds aren't great they'll be convicted with courts like we have. And even if they are, certainly there won't be stiff punishment, except for designer crimes like all this insider trading garbage. Then that weak court system, in my opinion, actually removes power from the police by generating negative case law. In fact, you'll never have as many rights in the U.S. as you do when you're wearing handcuffs.

I agree we have had some silly laws passed, but I don't think we've given up too much except that we have far more concern for a criminal's rights than a victim's.
