The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Kevin, I'm kinda pissed about my bench strength being too strong for everything.

Oh please Johnny, you know I'm a **** talker.

    Thursday 12/22

    Deadlift:
    135 x 5
    185 x 5
    225 x 5
    275 x 3 x 3

Lower back has been kind of tired... so I decided to take it easy. Doing all those olympic lifts made 275 feel heavy.

    Bulgarian Split Squats:
    45 x 8 x 4

This confirms that my right leg is weak. No wonder the left side of my lower back is more developed. I'm going to hit more one-legged stuff to try to correct this imbalance.

    Romanian Deadlift (Single Leg):
    45 x 8 x 4

Yeah... it's obvious that my right leg sucks. Feel like the muscles in my right knee are weaker. This is probably from overuse on my right leg when I was a youngin (skateboarding, wrestling, etc.).

    Hanging Leg Raises:
    BW x 8 x 4

Grip usually gives out on me before I get much of an ab workout. I need to strengthen the abs so I don't develop any further imbalances.

Winter classes start the 28th. Starting work on the 3rd. I thought I would get a break... but this is going to be even harder than school! I need to start studying for my actuary exam soon too.

I'm going to order the shoes and protein tomorrow. I need to look into buying the steel for my thickbar and dumbells after christmas. Might go grocery shopping to pick up some milk and almonds. If anyone has any idea where to find 2" ID washers, help a brotha out.

    I'm going to start a semi-Paleo diet:
    +Eggs
    +Nuts
    -Milk
    -Oatmeal
    +Fruits
    +Vegetables
    +Meat
    +Fish

I'll probably throw in some whole wheat bread too. For the most part, this is going to make breakfast and packing lunch a lot simpler. I'll be able to snack throughout the day to maintain blood glucose levels. I'm thinking about taking 2-4 scoops of protein per day too.

Johnny, do you think I can get that probability book to study for the actuary exam?

    Friday 12/23

    3-Board Press:
    45 x 10
    95 x 8
    135 x 5
    165 x 5
    195 x 3
    225 x 3
    245 x 2
    205 x 5

Still kinda sore from the close grips. I'll work 3 boards for a couple weeks... I know I got a lot more in me.

    Barbell Row:
    45 x 10
    95 x 8
    135 x 5
    155 x 5 x 5

    Yup... still weak.

    Rope Extensions:
    80 x 12 x 4

Ordered the shoes from Glenn Pendlay today. I was as nervous as a little kid for some reason. I think it's because I was talking to a top OL coach. My mom loaded up on the fruits, vegetables, nuts, eggs, and milk. I just gotta pick up some canned fish when I start work. I need to get off my ass after Christmas to grab that steel. I'm also going to order some protein powder tonight.

Haha bill, haven't heard from you in a while. I'm just going a little crazy since I'm starting this job. Getting in time to lift is going to be hard, so I really need to plan out the diet and everything. Anway, have a good Christmas.

    Weight: 185

    Barbell Shrugs:
    135 x 10 x 3
    155 x 10 x 3
    185 x 10

    Overhead Lockouts:
    45 x 1
    95 x 1
    115 x 1
    135 x 1
    155 x 1
    165 x 1

    Wrist Roller:
    25 x 1
    35 x 1

Went to a Christmas party and consumed at least 5000 calories there. I need to prepare for the 19lb Chrismast rib roast.

Got some pull up handles and a temporary dumbell made.

    Sandbag Clean & Press:
    60 x 10 x 4

Felt like throwing up. I need to get in better shape.

    Pullups:
    BW x 5 x 5

This is with 2" handles... very nice feel. Pullups are definitely feeling stronger since I been blasting them the past month.

    Sandbag Front Squat:
    80 x 10 x 4

I didn't know how great this exercise felt. It's definitely a keeper.

Getting ready for the meat Anyway, I'll work the wrist roller hard tomorrow since it's my rest day. Tomorrow is probably a good time to start getting myself reaquainted with the probability book.

Measured my arms at a twig-thin 14.75". I'll be happy when I get 16" ... which probably translates to a 275 close grip haha.

    Wrist Roller:
    25 x 1
    35 x 1
    45 x 1
    50 x 1

    Hangs (2" handle):
    BW x 15 sec
    BW x 20 sec
    BW x 23 sec
    BW x 30 sec

    Plate Pinch:
    (2) 10 x 15 sec
    (2) 10 + (1) 5 x 8 sec
    (3) 5 x 30 sec
    (2) 10 x 30 sec

    Hex Dumbell Pinch:
    20 x 15 sec
    25 x 10 sec
    30 x 8 sec

    Weight: 185

I'm looking to stay in the 180-185 range but slowly get leaner. Once I'm lean enough I'll go for 190-195.

    Behind-the-Neck Jerks:
    45 x 3
    65 x 3
    95 x 3
    115 x 3
    135 x 3
    155 x 3
    165 x 3
    135 x 3

Getting the bar from overhead to your back is quite ****in challenging. Cut it short at 165 since it was starting to get dangerous and the back of my neck was getting scraped up.

    Dumbell Row:
    50 x 8
    60 x 8
    70 x 8
    70 x 8
    70 x 8

It's good to finally be repping the 70s. Next up is the 80s. With that much weight on the 2" handle, the grip starts struggling a bit.

    Rear Delt Flies:
    20 x 12
    20 x 12
    20 x 12
    20 x 12

I did these laying face down on the bench. I'm going to move up to 25s on these since I'm giving my 20s away to my girlfriend.

Tried a dynamic warm up today. Did some duck unders and step overs w/ the bar setup in the rack, dumbell swings, overhead squats, and static stretching. ****ed around with the sandbag for a bit. I'll probably hit the sandbag a bit harder when I need a rest/cardio day.

Bill, I use the overhead squats as a general warm up. You're pretty much spot on... they really help the shoulders and just help my creaky knees warm up.

    Wednesday 12/28

    Front Squat:
    45 x 8
    95 x 8
    135 x 8
    165 x 8

I still need to concentrate on keeping the upper body upright so the bar doesn't roll onto my wrists. I'm also trying to stop 1" before rock bottom just so make sure I don't bounce out of the bottom.

    Squat:
    165 x 8
    165 x 8
    165 x 8

I still need to stretch to get those hamstrings and calves more flexible. I figured out that if I have my hands closer when I hold the bar my shoulder doesn't cramp up.

    Hanging Leg Raises:
    BW x 8 x 4

I had to squat since my OL shoes just came in the mail. These shoes make a huge different as far as stability goes. Well worth the money. I started the World Literature course today. I sit there from 6-10PM listening to a crazy black woman. Aside from that, there was a bit of bad news today.

Crazy grip work up above, man. Front squats can be painful if that **** rolls around, but don't you love it? Lookin solid in the new avatar too btw. Sorry to hear about the bad news...care to share?

Kiaran, thanks man. I've been working hard on those traps. Don't worry about the bad news... it might not turn out so bad in the end.

    Thursday 12/29

    Close-Grip Bench Press:
    45 x 10
    95 x 8
    135 x 5
    165 x 5
    195 x 5
    195 x 5
    195 x 5
    195 x 5
    195 x 5

**** yeah... that **** was ****in easy. Going for 205 x 5 x 5 next week. The OL shoes give me a much more stable base for leg drive. I'm thinking about getting rid of regular grip bench for overhead pressing. A 275 close grip is my main goal though.

    Chin-Ups:
    BW x 5
    BW+10 x 5
    BW+10 x 5
    BW+10 x 5
    BW+10 x 5
    BW+10 x 5

    Power Shrugs:
    135 x 10
    185 x 10
    225 x 8
    225 x 8
    225 x 8
    135 x 10

I need to write a paper about something (not sure what) by 6PM. I'll probably hit up some heavier squats on Saturday since last night's workout was too easy.

The reason for the my insane amount of working out is that I'm starting work on the third. I'm not going to be able to workout too consistently with work and the winter courses. Things should settle down a bit after the winter course though. I still need to take a course at UMass Lowell which meets once a week. I'll also have to study for the actuary exam and the GRE as well. Fitting in the workouts is going to be hard.

Nice close grips man. 205x5x5 is far from a 275 CGBP IMO.

Time management skill is vital in order to crame everything in! My advice is to carry your studying material with you at all times so whenever u have free time you can study. Aside from that good luck.

kev, thanks man... i love benching too.

bill, im hoping to work out at least 3 times a week... 4 would be ideal.

johnny, no **** its its far from 275... thats why its a goal haha. im gonna try to do most of my studying during lunch break. the class at umass lowell is gonna be a grad course so i can impress the prof and get a good recommendation for grad school. gonna have to work hard for that **** though.

actually now that i think about it... ill have 275 when i hit 225 x 5 x 5. one month for 215 and another month for 225. time flies these days... so it's really not that far away. of course this is assuming i can workout/eat consistently

    Friday 12/30

    -Many front squats with 95lbs.
    -Many hang cleans with 95lbs.

Just drilling the form. I don't like how my feet are at different positions when I catch the clean. I want every rep to look the same.

Procrastinating again... I don't feel like writing this stupid paper. Work is going to start on the third... bring it on!

    Snatch Pulls:
    135 x 3
    135 x 3
    155 x 3
    155 x 3
    185 x 3

****.. that was hard. Trying hard to setup for the 2nd pull.

    Squats:
    135 x 5
    165 x 5
    195 x 5
    195 x 5
    195 x 5

Squatting has become my new favorite exercise ever since I got these new shoes. Second place is close grip bench press. Of course I still hate pulling though.

    Sit-ups:
    BW x 20
    BW x 20
    BW x 20

Haven't done sit-ups on the floor since wrestling in high school. They definitely work!

So ****in tired... drinking sucks. The squats are feeling strong. I'll start working up 10lbs a week. I should easily have a 315 squat and a 275 front squat by the summer. I've hit 225 x 3 for the front squat and 235 x 5 x 5 on the back squat, so I'm not too far away.

Anyway, I have a stupid paper due on Tuesday. Work starts Tuesday too.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    Sunday 1/1

    Weight: 184

    Ahhh!

    Military Press:
    45 x 10
    65 x 8
    95 x 5
    125 x 5
    125 x 5
    125 x 5
    125 x 5
    125 x 5

Took me three sets of 125 to warm up.

    Barbell Row:
    95 x 5
    135 x 5
    155 x 5
    155 x 5
    155 x 5
    155 x 5
    155 x 5
    135 x 5

So hard to keep good form on this ****.

    Rope Pushdown:
    100 x 10 x 4

This one is for you, Johnny...

    Hammer Curl:
    30 x 15

Got the arms pumped up to 15 1/8".

Sleep was extremely ****ty last night. Performance still wasn't too bad. I have a good feeling about next bench session. Since I got home, I've been feeling stronger than ever.

I need to listen to Johnny. I'm going back into hiding. I'm not coming back out until I'm 200lbs of solid muscle and making 80k/yr.

I realized that people are really a product of their environment. Kids soak up everything like a sponge... especially how their parents act. When I have a kid I need to make sure I got my issues sorted out first.
