You have to ask yourself a simple question.

Do you believe in what this country is doing, enough to die?

Your answer to that is your answer to joining or not.

:withstupi I think you also have to ask yourself why you want to join one branch of the military instead of the other.

Actually I'd like to ask YOU a simple question. Why is it that almost every thread you post on, you feel the need to turn it into an American-bashing thread?

I'm with Saturday Fever on this one.

It doesn't make you anti-American or an American basher just because you disagree with some decisions the US Govn't makes.
Blind patriotism and the "love it, or leave it" attitude which has pervaded our society since Sept. 11 just shows how uneducated some people are. Its the ability to disagree with Govn't and to vote that makes our country so great. The "our way or the highway" attitude is more in keeping with communism and is what made Hitler grow in power...

(PS, I know I opened the door on this one, so bash away on me)

I agree with Geoff... Not everyone will agree with the US government and all of their decisions and laws; disagreeing doesn't make you less of a patriot or a citizen.

I think that if we all just went about our daily lives with blind faith, we would be in trouble. Or, look at it this way, if no one speaks up about what they believe to be an injustice or an unfairness, how will changes ever be made?

That is the main reason why I never joined the military. I couldn't see myself agreeing 100% with every US policy. Being in the military means you have to do what you are told, whether you like it or not. Plain and simple. Uncle Sam owns your ass.

    Damn straight.

Instead, you should form a militia. Then you defend your country as you see fit on your own terms.

In fact, my militia is going to go over to the ghettos tonight for a militia meeting. My militia is called the KKKK. The "Knoxville KKK". I'm not sure what the KKK stands for, since I'm a new guy. But my friend Jim-Bob told me it's a costume party tonight and that I should dress up as a ghost. It should be fun.

Nevermind all this crap. He's not asking about politics godammit.

Before you go in, if you decide to, I would suggest the following:

Be able to run a 7:30 mile
Do 60-70 pushups in 2 minutes
be able to do 6-8 pull ups

I think the marines focus on pull ups more than any other branch.

    Good Luck

Yep, these are about the minimum requirements. And boot camp will be months of suffering. According to some of my friends, you can somewhat lessen how much basic sucks if you have significantly better endurance going in. 5 mile runs are more like it.

I'm amused at the people saying that politics have nothing to do with it.

So many people join up without actually realizing that they may indeed be called on to die for the cause. Whether or not you agree with the cause is a rather significant point.

To answer the original question, you will need to be in pretty good shape. I have yet to see a fatty in the Marine Corps.

He said he "feels like he needs a change."

So before finding out what exactly the marine requirements are, he may want to figure out if this is indeed the kind of change he wants to make.

I don't think anyone really joines the marines to "die for their country", at least I hope not. My best friend joined about 7 months ago, what a big mistake he said. He isn't make much money. Basically, he wasn't home for christmas or new years, and had to sit on base the whole time, then they gave him leave after new years-he was pretty pissed you can imagine.

I say there are 3 reasons people join the marines
    1. It's in their family
    2. They need money and direction
    3. They think it's going to make them a bad ass
They really brainwash you though, after boot camp he sort of became a now-it-all, because he got his ass reamed for 3 months lol.

yeah most people join because of a big bonus you get for signing, or the promise of experiences and education.

id like to see the commercial for the military that says "we're at war right now, are you fit to die?"

by brother is in the service right now - granted we come froma military family, and again it's not for everyone, but if oyu work it right, there are tremendous benefits.

he's infantry now, with top security clearance. that means in 4 years when he gets out, he's looking at really high-paying jobs. he's single, he's enjoying himself.
