I read in another post that someone said to shrug at the top of a deadlift, and this sounds like a good idea to me. Just wondering if you guys think this is a good idea or would it be better to just shrug separately from your deadlift.

I've done it. Personally I prefer them separate as my grip begins to give way and neither back nor traps get a full workout.
The bar's practically falling out of my hands after a set of deadlifts, so yea I do them separately.
If you want to do BB shrugs, then do BB shrugs.

my exprience - joined gym 10 years ago, 6 1/2 years hard weight training exprience.
My arms are basically in a shrugged position the whole time...so I dont do a 'shrug' at the top, per say(se?), but I'm performing a shruglike movement.
I found my body was much more ridgid for...whatever reason...when my traps were flexed. I also got away with not having to do any direct trap work for a long time.
But yeah. I'm with the above idiots. Stupids, sorry. The above stupids.

You should pull your shoulders back at the top of a deadlift.

If you're using a double overhand grip and deadlifting for reps anyway, you could try it. However, concentrating on just lifting the weight while doing deads is usually hard enough - especially when you're squeezing out those last couple reps that seem to take about 40 seconds a piece.
If you're just doing light/moderate deadlift weight and want to try it as a superset, give it a shot and see how you like it.
