Bill, if you have a power rack then use it. Just set the safetey pins at the proper height and you'll be ok. If you need to drop the weight, the bar will land on the pins and not crush you.

you lose so much when u do squats on the smith machine versus to free standing ones.

the whole balancing weight aspect builds so much extra muscles that help stabilize the weight and over all you have to work harder to move the weight when your standing free.

im a huge advocate of not using the smith machine for squats, also the smith machine is a straight( or in some cases slightly angled but straight) path, and your natural motion in the squat is not perfectly straight and this can be harmful and posibly put you in a comprimising position.

now there are a few advantages of the smith machine like isolation work. you can place your feet farther in front of you and closer together to really target the quads, and this is next to impossible with free weight, also you can do split squats.

so the smith machine does have it uses, and i believe smith squats are better than no squats, but i would still drop the smith and do them free especially if you have access to a power rack

i use smith just to get my strengh up and this week is the week where i turn green and hit the rack

I havent done squats b4 so i had some time on the smith and now BRING IT ON! But there definately is a difference. I mean on a smith machine you have the route planned as in the bar doesnt sway or owt as you balance it etc... So more muscles are definately used on free weight squats in the rack ...

    enjoy cuz i will

since i seem to get more out of the smith machine squats , than the leg press , don't have acess to a hack machine would it make since to do smith machine along with squats , like big corey stated with the feet slightly forward ,
arnold advocated these as well as dorian, or is that just to many squatting exercises?
I may not be able to do more after the reg squats anyway

If you still have energy to do a few more sets of smith squats after free squats then feel free to do so. Smith squats aren't the devil and can have their uses but its just best to free squats first and foremost.

just stick w/ doing squats in the rack...that should be enough. and don't forget to go at least parallel.
