    Saturated Fat makes you fat?

    Does Saturated Fat make you fatter or is it just bad for you in terms of clogging up arteries or both?

    Excess calories make you fat, no matter the source.

    Basically, its bad for your heart, among other things. You do need some, however. The reason a lot of people and so-called "diet experts" tell you it will make you fat, it its a calorie dense macro, 9cal per/lb. I pulled this up to reveal that there are good things about saturated fat. http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/saturatedfats.htm
    I'm not saying, however, that you can't lose weight by adjusting your macronutirents, calories are far more effective, though.

    What if you are having excess calories, but the % fat is under 15, will you still get fat?

    In short, yes. Say for example if your maint. cals are 3000, but you're getting 5000 per day with only 10-15% of that being fat, you will still get fat even if its from protein and carbs. Basically, a calorie is a calorie.

    So since sat fat doesn't directly make me fatter, as long as I'm watching my calorie count I should be fine?

    From everything I've read on here, the answer to this question is yeah, you can eat whatever you want as long as your cals are under control, you are getting enough protein and EFAs, and you're not eating too many high GI carbs.

    EFA = essential fatty acids
    GI = glycemic index

    Keep saturated fats at around 15% of your total fat content. So, if you're eating 50g of fat, aim for 7-8g of it to be saturated.

    EFA - Essential Fatty Acid - basically, they're healthy fats that are necessary for a lot of your bodily functions.
    GI - Glucose Index - It's an index that people use to describe the affect foods have on your blood-sugar. It's successor, the insulin index, is becoming more widely used as it has more realistic data against how much insulin is affected instead.
