    So is anything more than 60g of protein a waste?

    i hear both sides of the story.

    from most of you, you tell me to injest 1- 1.5g per pound of bodyweight throughout the day. then i hear from nutritionalists that anything more than 60g throughout the day is a waste and can lead to bad things.

    what should i do? i injest about 180g per day right now.

    ohh..and they say anything over 60g per day turns to fat or you just crap it out.

    Just try to get at least 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight and i doubt you could go too wrong with that.

    Who would you rather take advice from? Nutritionalists, or people you have never met on a body building forum?

    I would take the later.

    for an everyday joe, the amount of protein required will be less, cos they are not constantly ripping up their muscles by training etc. So in that case they might not need as much. Your body will take as much as it needs to fix things up, by training you are creating a greater need.

    you need to look at the studies they are using to back up the data, also what you need for mere existance and what you need for bodybuilding are quite different

    generally i don't think its a good idea to get more protein than you need, but the weighlifter and endurance athelete needs about the 1g/lbs. nutritionist are usually focused on what the average american needs.

    yes exactly, there is some research as to the maximum amount of protein one could utilize, and IMO has still not answered the question. There is no doubt however, that those interested in BBing would need more than an average person.

    Same thing with the atkins diet...good for the average american

    NOT GOOD for lifters and other athletes

    I don't think I've eaten just 2000 calories a day in a LONG time.

    average american? where do they get 2000 cals from, surely 1 trip to McDona's will see that off

    That wouldn't even be a cut for me. I'd have to eat about 2600 just to LOSE weight.

    I dont think there has ever been a study that showed adverse effects of protien in a person with functioning kidneys

    there are however hundreds that show adverse effects with persons with kidney disease

    I don't think Atkins is good for anyone... average or not! Your brain needs carbs to work. Ketosis is works due to celular rejection. Unfortunately... it rejects everything, not just fat.

    its all in your head... 0.6g-0.8g/lb..

    225lb @ 17% bodyfat, currently cutting
    Current lifts while cutting (all raw): bench 275x4, squat 365x8
    Estimated current maxes: 300 bench / 450 dead / 450 squat
    Competition / Gym PRs (from March 08)
    Bench: 325 raw / 385 loose shirt
    Deadlift: 450 raw ADFPF 04/26/08
    Squat: 405 raw

    99% of people don't need more than 60g per day
    But strength training most likely changes that and you need 1.2-1.4g per kg of bodyweight.

    As long as you count protein in your caloric intake the excess will just be turned into glucose and used for energy (but this is an expensive way to feed yourself glucose).
    If the only thing you are holding is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
