The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

I talked to Glenn Pendlay for about 40 minutes today. He'll talk your damn ear off but is a great guy. He asked me what all I was going to be doing, and felt that I'd be alright to go with his Crossfit Bar. He said that to him, that bar is crap, but only because he is an Oly Coach and used to handling $700 bars. He says he has never had any people complain about it, and it will definitely be light years ahead of the ****ty ass generic bar I use now. He recommended that I not go with the 10kg bumpers and then add weight. He backed his bar, saying that it wouldn't hurt the bar, but he said that I'd destroy the bumpers. He recommended that I buy the CF Bar and 2 45lbs Bumpers. He said with that, I'd be able to supplement with metal weight until I can afford more bumpers. Only thing is, his bumpers are pretty expensive and both the bar and the bumpers were going to cost me $340. I feel like I can get bumpers cheaper, but will more than likely buy the bar from him.

Well today I decided to do some sled work and some sandbag work before playing flag football.

    Sled:

    Forward Belt x 70lbs x 30yards
    Forward Belt x 70lbs x 60yards
    Backward Belt x 70lbs x 60yards
    Forward Handle x 70lbs x 60yards
    Backward Handle x 70lbs x 60yards
    Left Grapevine x 70lbs x 60yards
    Right Grapevine x 70lbs x 60yards
    Backward Handle x 70lbs x 30yards

    Stand Work (54in Platform):

    80lbs sandbag x 1 x 10

    Unloaded 500lbs worth of weight.

I also played 3hrs of flag football. Went pretty good.

    Comments:

Pretty fun stuff today. The sled work went pretty well. It's a light weight, but not really trying to get too much out of it. The sandbag stuff was a bit more difficult. Getting it off the ground, to my legs and then high enough on my chest to get it up on the stand. It wasn't bad, just awkward. We played flag football forever today. Pretty tired and sore, but overall a great day.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

    Coke- Gracias Senor.

Kev- The sled is light right now, but it tends to make things fun. The bear crawl the other day was rough, even with the light sled.

    Stumpy- For sure man.

I'm fairly sore this morning from the **** I did yesterday. The 3hrs of Flag Football wreaked havoc on my hamstrings. My left one cramped up last night and I thought it was going to snap off. I've got ME Upper later on. It won't be anything spectacular, as I'm going to do a light 3x3. I'm thinking I'm going to do a 3x3 every week leading up to the meet.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

Hahaha for real man. I'm trying to plan this out. If the first set is too light, I'll definitely up the weight.

Haha once I get everything built and setup I'll take some pictures for ya.

    Felt great outside today.

    Weekly Weigh In: 152.2lbs

    Workout: ME Upper

    Location: Home

    Weight: 152.2lbs

    ME Bench (3x3)-

    45lbs x 10 x 2 (WU)
    95lbs x 5 (W)
135lbs x 3 (nice speed, excellent setup, felt tight)
155lbs x 3 (nice speed, quick, pretty good setup)
    185lbs x 3 (pretty solid, decent arch)
195lbs x 3 (pretty smooth, left arm lagging)
195lbs x 3 (not as smooth, arch flattened after unracking)

    CGBP-

    135lbs x 15 (+3reps)
    135lbs x 10 (10)
    135lbs x 8

    Chins-

BW x 10 (wide grip palms away)
BW +25lbs x 5 (shoulder width, palms in)
    BW +35lbs x 4 ("")
    BW +45lbs x 3 ("")
    BW +55lbs x 2 ("")
    BW +70lbs x 1 ("")

    BB Shrugs-

    135lbs x 10 (DBL OH)
    225lbs x 10 (DBL OH, reset on 8)
    315lbs x 5 (reverse DL)
315lbs x 5 (DL grip, more of a power shrug)

    *RC WORK*

    Comment:

Pretty good workout. The plan is to start each week's 3x3 with the ending weight of the week before. Next week I'll attempt 195 x 3 and then 205 x 3 x 2. I should be able to get it. Chins went pretty well. Not a bad session. The shrugs felt decent. Tried to DBL OH the 315 but that didn't workout. Got some pics during the workout and a vid that I'll put up as soon as they're finished loading. Need some advice on my setup.

Nice weight on the 3x3 man. I'm definitely expecting to see you hit 205 x 3 in a couple weeks. That should put you well on your way to a nice total, especially considering how good your deads are looking.

For sure Justin. I think I'll hit it next week.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flAPUBxhKOA - There's the vid. I need advice on my setting up and what not. Seems like I'm not staying as tight as I'd like.

Here's a couple of pics from the workout:

Stumpy- I appreciate it man. My strength isn't anything good at all.

Gal-Thanks man. I've got a long, long way to go.

Kevin- Appreciate you taking a look at it bro.

So today was our family's Christmas party. I've eaten so much ****ty food. It's absurd the amount of crap I've ingested today. On top of all that, I brought everything I had during the session.

    Workout: ME Lower

    Location: Home

    Weight: 152.2lbs

ME Squats (low box for height guide, touch and go)-

    45lbs x 10 (WU)
    135lbs x 5 (sitback more)
185lbs x 3 (stay tight, head up chest up)
    225lbs x 3 (tight, depth?, speed great)
245lbs x 3 (depth? speed decent, stay tight)
275lbs x 1 (below parallel, stay tighter, slower, NO BOX FROM HERE OUT)
    295lbs x miss (pansy)
    295lbs x 1 (+10lbs, 1" Shallow, slow grinder, big heart)

    Zercher Squats (from rack)-

    135lbs x 5 (cake)
    185lbs x 3 (smooth)
225lbs x 2 (cake baby, big PR time)
    245lbs x 2 (+20lbs)
    255lbs x 1 (+30lbs)

    RDLs (3" below knee cap)-

    135lbs x 10 (DBL OH)
    185lbs x 4 (reverse DL)
    225lbs x 5 (reverse DL, too light)
    275lbs x 3 (DL, decent)
    305lbs x 3 (+10lbs, DL, decent)

    Banded Trunk Twist-

    Monster Mini x 10/10
    Monster Mini x 10/10
Monster Mini (closer to frame) x 5/5

    Comments:

Brought everything I had today. Missed the 295 the first time. Normally I wouldn't attempt it again, but I got really pissed. As you'll see in the video, my depth was about an inch shallow. It was a grinder though, and I'm extremely happy to have put it up. From there I just picked up the intensity. The zercher squats felt tremendous today. Ended up putting up a 30lbs PR. No pain, no gain. The RDLs at the end felt great as well, and I was able to put up a PR on those. I'm probably the smallest 5'11 guy I know, but like my journal title says, I'm not stopping or quitting. Ever.

Nice job on the squats, your almost at 2x bodyweight! I'm with you on being so skinny; I'm so much skinnier than all of my other friends who are the same height as me. Do you think your going to bulk, or are you maintaining weight for athletic purposes?

Here's the video from today's workout. Did a crappy edit with Windows Movie Maker. Let me know what you think.

The song, btw, is from a band called Norma Jean. You should definitely check them out.
