The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Coke- Thanks.

Rick- Haha if you came around a bit more, you'd know bro. Nah, I got a bit sick and have some crap going on with my SI Joint. Lost my appetite last week because it and dropped some weight. I'm back though.

Weekly Weigh In: 157.2lbs. Up almost 2.5lbs from last week. I didn't each TOO much more than what I normally do, so this leads me to believe that a lot of the weight loss from last week was due to a drop in water weight.

My SI Joint hasn't been giving me too much trouble the last couple of days. It aches slightly every now and then but it appears that the stretching I've been doing has done me some good.

    Workout: ME Upper

    Location: Home

    Weight: 157.2lbs

    ME Bench-

    45lbs x 10 x 2 (WU)
    95lbs x 5 (WU)
    135lbs x 3 (big arch, nice speed)
155lbs x 3 (nice arch, pretty good speed)
    195lbs x 3 (decent arch, pretty smooth)
225lbs x 1.5 (shooting for a double but brought too low)
235lbs x miss (missed about 4inches off my chest, arch not that great)

    3 Board (No Arch)-

    135lbs x 10
    185lbs x 10 (+2 reps)
    205lbs x 6 (+1 rep, Close Grip)

    BB Shrugs-

    135lbs x 10 (DBL OH)
    135lbs x 10 (Snatch Grip)

    Yates Rows (Wide Grip)-

    135lbs x 10 (DBL OH)
    155lbs x 10 (DBL OH)
    155lbs x 10 (DBL OH)

    Band Face Pulls-

    #2 choked x 10
    #3 x 10

    Band Rows-

    #3 x 10
    #3 and #2 x 10

    *RC WORK*

    Comments:

Pretty good work today. Got in there and felt pretty strong. Had a slight bit of trouble getting my arch set where it felt best, but also where I could unrack the weight. Wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to accomplish today, and that kinda messed me up a bit. I hit a triple at 195 and then decided to try a double at 225. Missed the second rep about halfway up. Then decided to try 235. Missed it a bit off my chest. I came off my chest with some decent speed, which leads me to believe that fresh, I could hit it pretty decently. I think I'm at the point where I can start throwing some Board Presses in. Probably won't let them take up the majority of my ME Days, but I do belive I can start adding them in without too much trouble. Didn't do much heavy back work. Kept the assistance pretty much in line. Overall a good session.

    Coke- Appreciate it man.

    HB- Haha thanks man.

    LK- Nah I've done 205 for 3.

BW- It's been feeling good as of late. Thanks.

Stumpy-Haha yea. I usually keep the boards in my bag.

This workout was from Saturday. I had my first paintball tournament of the season in Rock Hill, SC today. It was cold and nothing short of a monsoon. The conditions were rediculous. We finished 4-2, just missing the semis by 15 points or so.

    Workout: ME Lower

    Location: Home

    Weight: 157.2lbs

ME Rack Pulls (2nd pin, 3" Below Knee)-

    135lbs x 5 (WU)
    225lbs x 3 (WU)
    275lbs x 1 (very fast)
    315lbs x 1 (nice and smooth)
    365lbs x 1 (felt good off rack)
    405lbs x 1 (not bad at all)
    425lbs x miss/miss (what in the world?)

    Oly Squats-

    135lbs x 10
    185lbs x 5
    225lbs x 15 (+5 reps)

    Comments:

Had to get in and get out. Very disappointed with the way my rack pulls have been going as of late. I haven't put up a Rack Pull PR in forever. Good thing is, my Oly Squats have been climbing. I put up a pretty nice PR after the rack pulls. May have to keep things simple as far as my pulling. We'll see how things go after my DL Day in two weeks. Overall pretty good session.

    Stumpy- Thanks man.

Still feel slightly fatigued from this weekend. Didn't get as much sleep last night as I would've liked. Oh well.

    CGBP-

    175lbs x 8
    175lbs x 8
175lbs x 7 (missed the 8th rep at the very top)

    Yates Rows (wide grip)-

    135lbs x 10
    155lbs x 10
    155lbs x 10

    Chins-

    BW x 10 (WGPA)

    Band Pull Aparts-

    MM x 10
    MM x 10

    Band Face Pulls-

    MM x 10
    MM x 10

    Comments:

My speed today felt great today. Lower back was a bit stiff so my arch was pretty crappy today. I just missed a rep PR on my CGBP. Couldn't lock out the last inch. Oh well. Tried to get a good variety in with my back work. I really want to build up some good upperback tightness, so I've been trying to hit it from a bunch of different angles.

Stumpy- I don't really follow any set guidelines. I just try to move the weight as fast as possible.

    Coke- Thanks man.

Alright today was a bit weird. I had DE Lower scheduled and when I got in the gym, they were having a campus "PLing Meet" that I decided to join at the very last minute. They had some guidelines that had to be followed though. You had to Bench 140% of BW, Clean 100%, Squat 175%, and Dead 185% in order to qualify. I would've structured my weights a bit different had these guidelines not been in place. I did part of my DE Lower day before doing the competition, so here is everything I did.

Workout: DE Lower and PLing Meet

    Location: Campus

    Weight: 157.2lbs

    DE Box Squats (Low Box)-

    45lbs x 10 (WU)
    135lbs x 5 (WU)
    195lbs x 2 (pretty decent speed)
195lbs x 2 (decent speed, need more sitback)
    195lbs x 2 (decent speed, wacked pins)
    195lbs x 2 (decent speed, pins again)
    195lbs x 2 (speeds alright, decent sitback)

    DE DLs (45s and Chucks)-

    135lbs x 5 (WU)
    185lbs x 2 (WU)

    Meet Lifts:

    Squat:

    245lbs- GOOD, way too easy
290lbs- GOOD, very fast, nothing to it
315lbs- MISS, I told them not to count this lift. I stalled midway but was still creeping along and definitely had it, but the spotter on my left side touched it. I threw it up and racked it but told the head judge not to count it. I'm pissed as hell because that would've been a 20lbs PR if the spotter had kept his damn hands away.

    Deadlift:

275lbs- GOOD, Haha what a joke
335lbs- GOOD, Oh what a smooth pull
385lbs- GOOD, 20lbs PR, form was a bit sloppy, have more in me

    Benchpress:

    185lbs- GOOD, very easy
    205lbs- GOOD, decent
230lbs- MISS, brought a bit too low and couldn't guide it in right

    PowerClean:

    135lbs- GOOD, very easy
    165lbs- GOOD, very easy
165lbs- GOOD, very easy, I was going to quit after the second clean because I had to run across campus for a Flag Football game I was getting ready to be late for. They told me I had to complete my third lift so I just turned around and threw the weight up.

    Comments:

The speed on my squats was decent. I was working with Justin and the pins were a bit high so it threw me just a bit, but it's all good. As for the meet, I think I did a good job since I decided 30minutes before it started to go ahead and do it. The squat really pissed me off. I had it coming up and the spotter had to touch it. My setup was crappy on that lift, but it was still inching along. My pulling was pretty damn good, and 2nd biggest of the day. I had quite a few stares. I'm pretty sure if I hadn't done all the other work, I could've pulled 405. Only guy to beat me was a 225lber who pulled 465. I didn't want to attempt 230 but I had to do it for the qualification stuff. I didn't qualify on that lift, but they may lower the standards since everybody didn't pass all of them. I rushed the cleans because I was late for that game. Didn't shrug at all and just muscled them up. If I had cleaned correctly and taken some time, I could've put up 185. Overall, very happy with the effort.

    Stumpy- Thanks man.

    Coke- Appreciate it.

Weekly Weigh In: 159.2lbs. Up 2lbs from last week. Weight is going in the right direction.

Today's workout was a bit different. Because of the "meet" on Tuesday, I decided to take it a bit easier than I normally would. Still worked hard, but didn't shoot for a 1RM on anything.

    Workout: ME Upper

    Location: Campus Gym

    Weight: 159.2lbs

    Flat DB Press-

    30s x 12/12 (WU)
    40s x 10/10 (WU)
    50s x 5/5
    60s x 5/5
    70s x 5/5
    80s x 5/5
    90s x 4/4 (+5lbs PR)

    Single Arm Standing Press-

    40s x 5/5 (Strict)
    50s x 3/3 (Strict)
    60s x 3/3 (2 Strict, 1 Push Press)
    70s x 3/3 (+10lbs PR, Push Press)

    Seated Wide Grip Cable Rows-

    105lbs x 10 UH
    135lbs x 5 UH
    150lbs x 5 UH
    165lbs x 5 UH
    165lbs x 5 UH

    Yates Rows (Wide Grip)-

    45lbs x 10
    135lbs x 10 (UH)
    155lbs x 10 (UH)
    175lbs x 5 (UH)
    185lbs x 5 (UH)
    135lbs x 10 (DBL OH)

    Band Pull Aparts-

    MM x 10
    MM x 10

    Oly Bar Curls-

    45lbs x 10
    65lbs x 5
    75lbs x 5

    *RC WORK*

    Comments:

Even though it was a different style workout, it went very good. Wasn't really setting out to set any new PRs, but I suprisingly put one up on both my DB Flat Press and OH Press. I'm definitely getting stronger overall. I did all my back work with an underhand grip and then threw in some curls because I've been having some slight elbow pain and I think that it might be coming from a lack of balance between my bicep and tricep. My Yates Rows felt pretty good overall. Didn't push them TOO hard but didn't slack either. Overall a good workout and I'm pretty happy with everything considering I did some stuff I haven't done in awhile.

    Sid- Haha yea!!!!!!

    Stump- Thanks man.

Drove up and worked out with some buddies back at my old school. Man I miss that weight room. It is so much better than where I'm at now. This was another weird workout. Because of the meet I wanted to switch things up slightly.

    BW +25lbs x 10/10

    Hanging Knee Raises-

    BW x 10
    BW x 10

    Comments:

Had a good time with this workout. Got to workout with my firneds, which I don't get to do too often. The workout itself was pretty good as well. I had thought about going for another 225 rep PR but decided to hit up 245 for a pretty good PR. The singles on the DL were done slow. They felt really good overall. Ended my main motions with some Zerchers. Haven't done them in awhile. My knees tracked forward a bit too much but the form was still pretty decent. Set a pretty decent PR on those as well. For this being a random workout, it went quite well. Very happy with the effort overall.
