The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Home for Spring Break this week. Don't have the money to go do anything, so I'm just laying around and resting.

    Workout: DE Upper

    Location: Home Gym

    Weight: 159.2lbs

    DE Bench (4 Grip)-

    45lbs x 10 x 2 (WU)
    95lbs x 5 (WU)
145lbs x 3 (+5lbs, pretty nice speed, arch could be better)
    145lbs x 3 (good speed, better arch)
    145lbs x 3 (good speed, decent arch)
145lbs x 3 (pretty decent speed, arch decent)
145lbs x 3 (pretty good speed, benched slightly high)
145lbs x 3 (best bench yet, brought low, good speed)
    145lbs x 3 (another good bench)
145lbs x 3 (good speed and pretty good arch)

    CGBP-

175lbs x 8 (make sure you press evenly in both directions)
    175lbs x 8 (better pressing)
    175lbs x 9 (+2 reps)

    Chins-

    BW x 5 (WGPA)
    BW x 5 (MGPA)
    BW x 5 (CGPA)
    BW x 5 (WGPI)
    BW x 5 (MGPI)
    BW x 5 (CGPI)

    Yates Rows (wide grip)-

    135lbs x 10
    155lbs x 10
    175lbs x 10

    BB Shrugs-

    135lbs x 10 (DBL OH)
    225lbs x 10 (DBL OH)
    225lbs x 10 (Reverse DL)
    225lbs x 5 (jump shrugs, DBL OH)

    Comments:

Happy with today's session. Increased my DE Bench by 5lbs but don't really feel like I sacrificed any speed. The speed was very good today. My arch could've been better, but overall it wasn't bad. Hit a two rep PR on my CGBP. Time to move up to 185 and attempt it for 3 sets of 8. I still think I need to learn to activate and use my lats more when I bench, so I'll be focused on doing that over the next couple of weeks. My back work went really well. Rotated some grips on my chins and really felt them hit my lats. The rows went good as well. The shrugs weren't anything special but I did decide to add a set of jumping shrugs in so that I can learn to shrug the weight more when I clean. Overall a good session and I'm happy with the effort.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

Stumpy/Detard- Thanks guys but my triceps aren't all that strong at all.

Sid- I could probably call the jump shrug a power shrug, but basically what it is, is just a regular DBL OH shrug but I get a lot of hip drive and explode up onto my toes while pulling as high as possible with my traps. I really suck at getting a good shrugging motion in while cleaning, so I'm going to be practicing it from time to time.

Coke- Not in the fight game TOO much. I go roll with Justin every now and then but not all that much.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

Nice DE Day chubs... 5 lbs with no speed lost is great...
It's one of the reasons I don't follow a strict plan/weight on DE day...
Some days 60-65% feels light and I can throw it to the ceiling... so I go up..
Other days it is like a pickup on my chest... so I take it down..

But then again.. I'm not Louie...

BW- Appreciate it Bear. I do a lot of lifting by feel. I don't worry about lifting in Waves. If the bar doesn't feel light enough, I take weight off. If the weight is very light I add some. Pretty simple huh lol.

Did nothing but lay around all day today. Did a little work but that was it. Gotta love Spring Break.

    Comments:

Great session overall today. Didn't have a box to squat off of at the gym I was at, so I just decided to do my speed work without it. Went up 10lbs but felt that the speed didn't suffer much at all. I could've been a bit tighter at the bottom of the squat, but after the initial push, I was pretty fast. My deads were very quick tonight, probably the quickest they've ever been. I added the Monster Minis, and they started to hit about 3 inches off the ground. Had a very good initial pull today. Wanted to do some cleans but decided to bite the bullet and do some GMs. I've been reading a lot lately, especially some DL stuff by Cressey, and he was talking about really hammering the lower back for Sumo pullers. Decided to take his advice. Hit up some ab work and got out. It took a bit longer than usual because of how crowded it was, but overall it was a very good session.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

Been itching to get into the gym for the last two days. Felt great going into the workout.

Weekly Weigh-In: 160.1lbs. Had several different readings based on foot position, so I threw out the extremes and average the other readings. First time weighing in over 160lbs in a long time.

    Workout: ME Upper

    Location: Home

    Weight: 160.1lbs

    ME Bench-

    45lbs x 10 x 2 (WU)
    95lbs x 5 (WU)
135lbs x 3 (nice solid pressing, brought nice and low)
155lbs x 3 (nice pressing, quick, flex lats)
185lbs x 3 (nice even press, need better arch and leg drive)
205lbs x 2 (very smooth double, squeezed bar, still need leg drive)
215lbs x 2 (nice double, set feet too far back, no leg drive)
225lbs x 1 (so easy but setup underneath pins and wacked them, stupid)
225lbs x 2.5 (+1 rep PR, just did miss the 3rd rep about 1/3 from top)

Close Grip 3 Board (No Arch)-

    205lbs x 5
    210lbs x 5 (+5lbs)
    215lbs x 2 (+10lbs, couldn't get steady)

    Chins (MGPI)-

    BW x 5
    BW +45lbs x 5
    BW +50lbs x 5
    BW +45lbs x 4

Yates Rows (wide grip, DBL OH)-

    135lbs x 10
    185lbs x 5
    195lbs x 5
    195lbs x 5 (some english)
195lbs x 10 (close grip, DBL UH, some english)

    BB Shrugs-

    135lbs x 10 (wide, DBL OH)
    225lbs x 5 (jump shrug, DBL OH)
    275lbs x 5 (Reverse DL)

    *RC WORK*

    Comments:

Very solid effort today. First time going in there and accomplishing what should be done. Just did miss 225 for a triple. I believe I would've had it on the first set if I hadn't set up so far underneath. I also had 3 sets above 90% before attempting the triple. Fresh I think I'm good for at least 235 at this point. Was very happy to see the missed rep come cleanly off my chest. All the speed work seems to be paying off. Hit up some heavier CG 3 Board work. Set some PRs in that as well but didn't have too much left in the triceps at the end of that. Transitioned on into my back work and had some decent work there as well. Nothing to write home about, but solid work none the less. I've got to start working on my flexibility so that I can get a decent arch. After reviewing some video, I'm not getting much arch at all. Definitely something that needs to be worked on before I go competing. Overall a great workout today. Very happy with everything.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

    Detard- Appreciate it man.

LK-Thanks man. If I had set up correctly it would've been a triple. Oh well.

McV- Thanks man. Not sure if you've been in here before, but if you haven't, welcome to the journal.

Felt so good going into the session today. Could've had some better sleep last night, but I was feeling very alert before lifting.

    Workout: ME Lower

    Location: Home

    Weight: 160.1lbs

ME Reverse Band DL (Blues (#5s) set at 6ft, top pin)-

    185lbs x 5 (so light, DBL OH)
    225lbs x 3 (so easy, DBL OH)
275lbs x 3 (very easy, starting very close to bar, DBL OH)
315lbs x 3 (easy as pie, focus on arch, DBL OH)
365lbs x 1 (focus on maintaining arch, last DBL OH set)
405lbs x 1 (way too easy, great pull, arch back)
455lbs x 1 (slower pull, not too bad, set hips a bit high)
500lbs x 1 (BAM!, heavy as hell, rounded back, so what? SFW!!!)

    Oly Squats-

    135lbs x 10
    185lbs x 5
    225lbs x 5
    255lbs x 5 (+10lbs)
    260lbs x 5 (+4 rep PR)

    Plate Side Bends-

    45s x 10/10
    45s x 10/10

    Band Trunk Twist-

    #2 x 10/10
    #2 x 10/10
    #2 x 10/10
    135lbs x 10/10 (Used BB)

    Comments:

SFW!!!! Killed it today. I had a feeling today would be a good day, and I definitely wasn't disappointed. Actually surprised myself with how high I ended up going. 500lbs is a ass load of weight for me to be holding in my hands haha. My back rounded more than I would've liked but oh well. Sometimes ya just gotta grind things out. Learned a couple of things. First, I have the grip strength to DBL OH 365 and second, if I can get this bar moving, I've got some solid weight in me. The squats went awesome as well. Wanted to rep out on 225 but had to stay focused and go on through my 3 x 5. 260lbs was my Oly Squat max, but so much for that haha. Felt great. My ab work kinda slacked off, and I don't need to be letting that happen, but I had to rush at the end to get stuff together in order to meet the gf. Got a lot of video today so once I can edit everything and get it up on youtube I'll post the link. Man today was a great workout. Hoping to use this session to set the tone for things to come in the future.
