The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Kev - I'd like to but my BW is gonna start moving up from here on, so we'll see haha.

Was my birthday yesterday, so I ate a lot of shit. Weigh In was skewed because of that.

    Workout: NOV Round 1

    Weight: 182lbs

    ME Bench (94/96/98%) -

    45lbs x 5 x 2
    95lbs x 5 x 2
    135lbs x 3 x 2
    185lbs x 1
    225lbs x 1
    250lbs x 1
    255lbs x 1
    260lbs x 1

    SSB Squat -

    bar weight = 82lbs

    bar x 5
    bar + 50lbs x 5
    bar + 90lbs x 5
    bar + 140lbs x 5
    bar + 160lbs x 5
    bar + 210lbs x 5 (+10lbs)

    DE Bench (50%) -

    135lbs x 3 x 8

    Yates Rows -

    135lbs x 12 x 3

    Comments:

Don't have time to post the video. Still working on ironing out this new form. Weights were coming off the chest pretty fast, even with the longer pause. SSB Squats are still moving which is good. Pretty happy with today's session.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

    Comments:

I'll try to work on editing the video from my last two workouts and posting them up. My lower back has been trashed since the bench session on Monday. Wasn't feeling great going into this workout. The speed wasn't there on the pulling but everything felt smooth and moved at a steady pace. Turned into a fairly decent session.

Session looks great sorry to hear about the back pain. I've had tweaks and injuries on the low back from benching too, arch issues on my end. Pulling strength is looking really good.

I like the Swiss bar bench. Wish I had one to use. I'm not sure what its purpose is tho, other than hitting your muscles from a slightly different angle. The pulling is strong. Are you still starting with the bar a few inches in front of your shins? Interested to know if you think that is helping

Kev - Thankfully it wasn't so much pain as tightness. That arch and leg drive really torques my back. I've also been on the range for the last several days, all day, helping with our firearm's qualifications. All that adds up.

Lion - The swiss bar ends up taking the lats and rear delts out of the press. Transfers the focus and makes it more difficult. I find it is a good supplement for my regular bench.

    Pat - Thanks bud!

Here is a video of the past two training days.

Lifts look great in the video Chub, as far as back tightness from the arch I never felt comfortable going wide like you do with my feet. When I switched to closer and tucked more it felt much better but thats just me. Pulls looked awesome as well.

Kevin - I appreciate it. Thanks man!

    Workout: NOV Round 1

    Weight: 182lbs

    Strict OH Press (96/98/100) -

    45lbs x 5 x 3
    95lbs x 5 x 2
    115lbs x 3 x 2
    135lbs x 2 x 2
    155lbs x 1
    160lbs x 1
    170lbs x miss

    Push Press -

    185lbs x 3
    195lbs x 2

Sumo DL off blocks (~2.5 mats) -

    135lbs x 3 x 2
    225lbs x 3
    275lbs x 3
    315lbs x 3
    365lbs x 3
    385lbs x 3
    405lbs x 3
    425lbs x 3

    Comments:

Pressing didn't go like I wanted. I have a piss poor OH press. Oh well. The pulling felt amazing. Very quick off the blocks. Big PR. Heaviest straight weight I've pulled and for being only about an inch higher than what I pull my heavy singles off of, this was a big surprise. Switching back to sumo and working on my head placement seemed to really help.

Nice pulling..and your OHP is fine in my opinion..lol

I bought the 5/3/1 ebook. I had been digging into it but didn't feel like I knew what I was doing, so buying it and reading it today cleared things up. Totally worth $20. I'm gonna do "The Triumvirate" and throw my cleans in on deadlift day like you suggested, and use 2 assistance exercises per workout. And, starting with weights so low will give me a chance to acclimate myself to Sumo pulling. I'll start on Monday or Tuesday.

    I appreciate it guys.

Well, this week was supposed to be a deload week. I, however, like a dumbass let my ego get ahold of me today and worked up heavy. Ended up tweaking my back. Fucking sucks. Will take the rest of the week off and see if I can feel better by Monday.

With all that said, Monday I worked up to a heavy incline of 185 x 9 for a 3 rep PR. Today I worked a high block pull Conv for 405 x 3. Last rep got all out of position and jacked my shit up.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

    I appreciate it guys.

Got back in the gym today. Took it easy on a few things. First day of NOV Round 2.

    Workout: NOV Round 2

    Weight: 185lbs

    ME Bench (90/92/94%) -

    45lbs x 5 x 2
    95lbs x 5 x 2
    135lbs x 3 x 2
    185lbs x 1
    225lbs x 1
    245lbs x 1
    250lbs x 1
    255lbs x 1

    Rope High Rows -

    100lbs x 10 x 3

    DE Bench (50%) -

    135lbs x 3 x 8

    Rope Tricep Pushdowns -

    60lbs x 10 x 3

    Planks x 3 sets

    Comments:

Took it easy on my back and skipped the SSB. Also didn't work myself into as tight of a position on the benching. Otherwise everything felt great. I'm going to apply some of the ideas from Matt Bs thread in the bodybuilding forum to my accessory work, specifically the lighter accessory work. The increased ROM really hit my lats and triceps hard. Weight was light on those but left me shaking.

Pat...NOV (North of Viada) is my mashup of some of the ideas of Wendler's 5/3/1 and Alex Viada's concepts on programming.

    Workout: NOV Round 2

    Weight: 185lbs

    Sumo DL (off 2 mats, 90/92/94%) -

    135lbs x 3 x 2
    185lbs x 3 x 2
    225lbs x 3 x 2
    275lbs x 3
    315lbs x 1
    365lbs x 1
    375lbs x 1
    380lbs x 1
    390lbs x 1

    Bench w/ Chains -

    bar + 40lbs chain x 5
    bar + 60lbs chain x 5
    bar + 80lbs chain x 5
    95lbs + 80lbs chain x 10
    135lbs + 80lbs chain x 8
    185lbs + 80lbs chain x 3
    135lbs + 80lbs chain x 8
    135lbs + 80lbs chain x 7

    DE DL (55%) -

    225lbs x 2 x 8

    Comments:

Didn't force the issue with my back today. Felt pretty decent. Really need to pull my arch tighter. Since I've been out of BJJ with this broken finger I feel like my mobility has started to go to shit. I need to get back in so I can get into a better position. Video looks like shit but I'll post it up here shortly.

I really need some more mobility as well, especially in the hips. Awesome sumo's and chained bench, love benching with chains.
