The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Coke- Thanks man, I'm trying.

Weekly Weigh In- 171lbs. Down .2lbs from last week. Saw this coming. Exams killed me.

    Location: Hometown Gym

    Workout: BJJ Focus

    Yates Rows-

    45lbs x 10
    135lbs x 5
    165lbs x 5 (+10lbs)
    165lbs x 5 (+10lbs)
    165lbs x 5 (+10lbs)
    165lbs x 5 (+10lbs)
    165lbs x 5 (+10lbs)

    DB Press-

    40s x 10
    50s x 5
    60s x 5
    80s x 7 (+2 reps)
    80s x 7 (+2 reps)
    80s x 7 (+2 reps)
    80s x 6 (+1 rep)
    80s x 6 (+1 rep)

    Weighted Crunches-

    3 sets x 10

Overall a pretty good workout. Yates Rows felt strong. I feel like my back strength is fairly decent. The jump to 175 should be easy for next week. DB Press' went good as well. I had to drop to the 80s only because my home town gym only goes up that high. It's a good feeling to be maxing the DBs with relative ease, granted it isn't much weight haha. Overall a good session and I'm happy with it.

Just think of a bent row, except for being so far bent over, you bend at roughly a 45 degree angle. I also use a double underhand grip like I'm going to try and curl the bar.

    Munchkin- Thanks little guy haha.

Nick- Thanks man. It was a pretty good workout, though I wanted 5 x7 on the DB Press.

Coke- Gracias Senor. I'm really liking the 5x5.

Popped 200mg of Caffeine before hitting the gym. Took it 30min before lifting but didn't really feel much of anything. Anybody have a def feeling when they take it?

    Location- Hometown Gym

    Workout- Hip Power

    Deads:

    135lbs x 3
    135lbs x 3
    185lbs x 2
    235lbs x 2 (+10lbs)
    235lbs x 2 (+10lbs)
    235lbs x 2 (+10lbs)
    235lbs x 2 (+10lbs)
    235lbs x 2 (+10lbs)

    Deep Squats:

    135lbs x 5
    135lbs x 5
    185lbs x 3
    235lbs x 3 (+10lbs)
    235lbs x 3 (+10lbs)
    235lbs x 3 (+10lbs)
    235lbs x 3 (+10lbs)
    235lbs x 3 (+10lbs)

    Weighted Crunches:

    3 sets x 10

Overall a very good workout. Deads felt nice and strong. Really focusing on keeping the bar close to me on the way up. Grip is feeling nice and strong as well. Squats were nice and deep. Def. should be able to get 245 for both next week without trouble. Was hoping the caffeine would give me a def. boost, but I didn't really feel anything, though my sister and mother said that I was acting wired when I ate dinner with them after the workout. I dunno? Overall very happy with the workout.

    Nice session Chubs.

Are you following any specific routine? Looks like you are doing a modified version of 5x5, though some sessions it appears you are shooting for more and others less than 5 reps?

Eric- Thanks man. I'm following a modified 5x5. I use two and three reps for my deads and deep squats, mainly so I can go heavier. The only reason I'm using higher than 5 reps for my DB Press is that the gym doesn't have heavier than 80s, so I've already maxed them out.

    Coke- Thanks man, I'm trying.

Risk- Thanks man. Welcome to the journal. Feel free to come around anytime.

    Weighted Chins-

    BW x 5
    BW + 5lbs x 5
    BW + 15lbs x 5
    BW + 25lbs x 5
    BW + 50lbs x 4

    Bench-

    45lbs x 10
    95lbs x 10
    135lbs x 5
    145lbs x 5
    155lbs x 5
    165lbs x 5
    175lbs x 5
    185lbs x 5
    195lbs x 4 (+10lbs)

    One Arm DB Rows-

    62lbs x 5
    82lbs x 5
    92lbs x 5
    92lbs x 5
    92lbs x 5
    92lbs x 5

Overall I am very disappointed in myself for not increasing on the chins. I shoulda def been able to get 5 today. Bench at least felt stronger. I'm going to try and increase every working set instead of doing my working sets at the same weight. We'll see how that goes. DB Rows went good. Overall not a bad workout, but I'm mad I didn't do better.

    BJJ: 4hrs

Started off helping the kids class on some simple self defense stuff and then adding a takedown and arm lock into it. Ended up rolling with one of the kids at the end of the class. He's been taking for quite awhile, so it kills him when I beat him. I tried to go realllllyy slow and see what I could pick up, so maybe I learned something from it. Rolled for the 2hrs. Basically split it up into 10-25 minute grappling matches. Lost every one of them, but rolled with only the best people in the class. Came close to finishing one of them at times, but overall I just tried to work on my game. Very happy with today's class.

Moving up a little here and there with the weights is really all you can ask, you've got a lot on your plate -
It is awesome the way you are being humble to round out your whole game Andrew!!

Nice work bro. Dont worry about the chins, you have been making some nice progress lately, it has to slow down at some moment, otherwise you will have cars strapped to you when you do them. Nice work man.

Risk- Thanks man. Not happy where I'm at, but I hope to continue progressing.

Coke- Haha thanks man. You can only get better by grappling better people.

Eric- Thanks man. I know I should expect to stall at times, but hey, there ain't nothing wrong with having cars strapped to ya.

Overall a very good workout effort wise. Started out with some cleans. Things were getting fairly heavy, though I threw up 165 easier than 155. I REALLY wanted to get my bodyweight though, so I went for it. Missed it bad the first time but thought I could get it. Missed it just barely the second time. On the third I got a good pull off the ground was able to get it up. I was pretty happy though I know I need to focus on getting my elbows out in front of me at the end of the lift. My tendons hurt a bit after these. Couldn't find a box low enough, so I just stacked plates on top of each other and squatted on them. They went pretty good. Pretty happy with today's workout.
