The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Comments:

Pretty decent workout today. Nothing insane. I had a little bit of hip shift that you'll see from the video when I get it up. I'd probably be red lighted, as I'm really pushing the limit on bottom of ass/top of hamstring with the arch. I think it wouldn't be an issue on a single, but I get a tad squirrley on the last sets. The rack pulls smoked my back for sure. I'm liking the RE benching instead of the DE bench. Will probably keep that for awhile.

Pretty decent squatting today. Spotter was a little over zealous and bumped me on the last rep of 335. I could have pushed through, but oh well. The pressing wasn't what I wanted, but last week I was wearing my EFS Elbow Sleeves, so maybe that was worth a rep or two. Hit some back work and called it a day.

Got a question. I'm in the market for my first handgun. I wanna learn to shoot and eventually work my way into a concealed carry permit. I have someone interested in selling a Taurus Milennium Pro .40 cal. He's looking to get the S&W Bodygaurd because he feels like the Taurus is a little too big to carry without a side holster, which I guess would also be a concern for me.

He also said the S&W is only accurate to a 6 inch target up to 15ft or so and the Taurus to around 30ft. That seems inaccurate to me since I've seen you split the edge of a business card with a handgun..lol

What do you think about all this? Or do you have any other suggestions?

The S&W Bodyguard is what I refer to as a belly gun. The sights are slightly lower on the gun, which can affect accuracy at greater distances. With that said, these distances I'm referring to are out past 15-25 meters. If you have an individual saying that a pistol is only accurate out to 15ft (or 30ft), he's A) full of shit B) a poor shooter. I'm a decent pistol shooter, and I feel fairly confident that I could split cards with either pistol you handed me.

If you're looking at picking up a pistol, you've got to figure out what the primary purpose for having the pistol is (carrying concealed in summer clothes, under a suit, winter clothes all year round etc) and how much shooting you plan to do. I'm a big fan of a Glock or a Smith and Wesson M&P. Smith and Wesson has a very slim line pistol out, The Shield. I've put my hands on one a few times and it seems to be a pretty solid concealed option.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

LOL...yeah I told him he was a shitty shooter and he agreed.

I don't think I'm gonna be a real serious sport shooter, although I may end up liking it a lot. I work with several guys who shoot regularly. I just want to get my first gun and really learn to handle it safely and efficiently, fire it properly, etc and learn to use it in a defensive situation. This is gonna be my intro gun because it took some convincing to get my wife comfortable with it and I don't want her to feel like it's not safe to have in the house. I'd like to be able to carry it a large portion of the time in places where it's legal.

I'll check that Shield out and do some more research about carrying and such. Thanks man!

Well, well, well. I see they changed the forums back. I logged in twice after they changed it, saw my journal was gone and said "I'm done". I see you pulled off of the dead-lifting for a while (pun intended). This will be good, because all I've done is run and do really high rep sets for 2-3 weeks and dropped some weight. So... yea. about that challenge?

    I'm still game man.

I've severely fucked up my back. Happened Saturday when I was front squatting. Hit an easy set at 225 for 5 and then went to do 245 for 5 and unracked it. Instantly felt the middle of my back, roughly area of the lat tie in, seize up. I've been unable to move much at all since Friday. Unfortunately I've had to work with it like it is, so that's not helping any.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

So my backs done. Fucked it up again playing ultimate frisbee. Diagnosis from the doc is severe strain/partial tear of my serratus posterior inferior. Looks like pulling 500 this year isn't going to happen. Going to try and heal up and then I'm thinking of running The Cube Method with a Alex Viada influence.

Well that's crappy. Hope it heals up soon. I know back problems as well as anyone. I've taken it really slow and that sucks but it's better than ever now. I'm sure it'll work out.

I put my hands on some pistols Saturday. The ones that felt best in my hand and for carrying seem to be the SW Shield and the Ruger LC9. I think I'm gonna go with the Shield in 9mm unless you can come up with a reason for me to go with the 40. The guy at the shop is a gun NUT (owns over 600, or so he says) and has both versions of the Shield and he says the 9mm is a more steady and accurate shot. He also told me about a nice private gun club 15 minutes from my house.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

Alright motherfuckers. I'm back. Time to smoke shit. No more weakness.

Decided to take some different ideas and build a split. Pulled heavily from The Cube/Brian Carroll/Alex Viada. Calling it Viada's Cube. Going to get stronger and better at benching, by benching; deadlifting, by deadlifting; and squatting by squatting. Intensity declines throughout the weak. Three confirmed lifting days with a fourth accessory day if my body is up to it. Still balancing lifting and BJJ. A lot of submaximal work.

    Workout: Viada's Cube

    Weight: 188.4lbs

    Bench (80%) -

    45lbs x 5 x 2
    95lbs x 5 x 2
    135lbs x 3 x 2
    185lbs x 3
    215lbs x 2
    215lbs x 2
    215lbs x 2
    215lbs x 2
    215lbs x 2

CGBP (85%, extended thumb from smooth) -

    225lbs x 3
    225lbs x 3

Wide Grip Pause Bench (75%, middle finger on rings, 2 second pause on chest) -

    195lbs x 4
    195lbs x 4

    Lat Pulldowns (wide U-Bar) -

    120lbs x 15
    120lbs x 15
    120lbs x 15
    120lbs x 15

    Front/Side Raise -

    15s x 10/10 x 2

    Ab Work x 3 sets

    Chins (AMRAP x 3 rounds) -

    BW x 10
    BW x 8
    BW x 10

    Comments:

After 3 weeks of lifting, the first sets of bench felt heavy. As my body got a little more acclimated, it began feeling a lot better. In and out of the gym faster than my other split, but still a lot of work accomplished. I don't like that my numbers on the chins were so low, but being at the end of the workout, they were pretty rough. I like this split.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

I had played flag football for almost 3hrs after my last workout. Since then behind my right knee has been extremely tight. I think I pulled something. Was good to squat on it but ended up cutting today short.

    Workout: Viada's Cube

    Weight: 188.4lbs

    Comp Squat (70%) -

    45lbs x 5 x 2
    95lbs x 5
    135lbs x 3
    185lbs x 1
    225lbs x 1
    240lbs x 8
    240lbs x 8

High Bar Oly Squat (75%) -

    255lbs x 6
    255lbs x 6

Low Bar Pause Squat (3 sec pause in hole, 65%) -

    225lbs x 8
    225lbs x 8

    Back Ex x 1 set

    Ab Work x 1 set

    Comment:

Cut it there. Tried to do the leg curls but between that and the back extensions it was killing my hamstring tie in. With it being the first squat day in 3 weeks I didn't want to run the risk of tweaking anything. Got to say, this was extremely difficult. It's been awhile since I've done some higher rep squatting (>5). Not sure if my max was set a bit high, or if my body just needs to get back into the groove of squatting, but I was smoked. The pause squats were supposed to be sets of 10, but with a 3 sec pause in the hole, 8 was all I could manage. Good shit.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

Keep at it mate, you'll get there! Can't imagine what a back injury like that must be like! Most i've ever done is severely pulled muscle, never a tear or anything!

Pat/Good - Back is feeling pretty good. It's looking like it was a slight tear and nothing complete. No pooling of blood but took 3 weeks to heal up. So far so good.

    Comments:

Couldn't make the gym today so I hit up a buddy and trained in his garage. Slick concrete floor, old stiff ass bar, and one of the best pulling sessions I've had in awhile. Everything felt light and fast, even with my stiff ass hamstring and back. Music blaring, ears ringing, it was awesome.

    Comments:

Pretty damn good session for me today. Pulling with my Texas DL Bar for the first time. Felt good. Worked out fairly wide with the sumo stance. The 80% from the floor was feeling smooth enough I figured I'd pull 85% for a couple of doubles even though it didn't call for it. Probably could have pulled it fairly easily for at least a triple if not a 5. The Deficit DLs actually felt phenomenal. Funny thing is I think my Conv DL may be stronger than my Sumo Stance haha.

I'm officially a gym snob. I lifted with a buddy of mine who wants to start training some. We had to lift at Planet Fitness. What.The.Fuck. That place is absolutely horrible. Just terrible. The bench was so low to the ground I couldn't give any leg drive or arch. Pretty much all arms and shoulders. Numbers were skewed as such. Never going back haha.

Kevin - Thanks man. There was a handful of the principles I liked and thought would work well for me, and there was some thing I wasn't 100% happy with. I like a lot of Alex Viada's stuff, so I decided to mesh them. Oh well, I like trying to make splits that work well for me.

    Workout: Viada's Cube DE Squat

    Weight: 193.4lbs

    Comp Stance Squat (70%) -

    45lbs x 5 x 2
    135lbs x 3
    185lbs x 1
    225lbs x 3
    225lbs x 3
    225lbs x 3
    225lbs x 3
    225lbs x 3
    225lbs x 3
    225lbs x 3
    225lbs x 3

    Oly Squat (75%) -

    240lbs x 5
    240lbs x 5

Comp Stance Pause Squat (65%, 3 sec pause in hole) -

    205lbs x 8
    205lbs x 8

    Back Ex/Leg Curl x 3 sets

    Chins x 10 reps

    Workout:

The squat sessions on this always leave me nauseous. Always leave me smoked. I hate Oly Squat with a damn passion. I really need to get better at it, but damn I hate it. Blah.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

    Comments:

Up early today. Gotta hit the gym so I can do the whole family thing. Hit the numbers I wanted on the paused OH Press. Turned into a straight pool season, pump, workout.
