I normally use straps when I do my back. Today I forgot one of my straps so I did my routine w/o straps. I was fully expecting to do fewer reps do to grip strength. To my surprise, my lifts were much easier today. A whole lot easier in fact. Grip strength was not a problem and my back was feeling really good after the workout. My form was exactly the same, nothing changed except no straps.
I'm still a little baffled by this. Could it be that my arms were playing more of a part w/o the straps? If this were the case I should have had a good pump in my arms, but I didn't. I'm very tempted to dump the straps. I guess the only way to find out if the straps were hindering me in anyway is to do my next lifts w/o straps and see if I get the same results.
Anyone ever experience this?
I found that the use of gloves actually hurt my grip
after some thinking I concluded that the difference could be accounted for in the diameter of grip.
The gloves I was using caused my grip on the same bar to be a bit more open, as if I was using a bar with a larger diameter.
The more open my grip was the harder it was for me to grasp heavy weights.
I had this theory backed up in doing pullups
I have noticed that I fail on grip less frequently when I use a thinner bar.
So basically my conclusion was that by increasing your "wide/open" grip it also has a great impact on your narrow grip!
hope that makes sense, its kinda hard to explain
just my theory
I undestand what you are saying geoff. However, when I use straps, grip doesn't becomes an issue. I guess what I' saying is that I can do the same weight much easier w/o straps than with straps, which is what I find confusing.
where do you buy straps ??
Sorry about the off topic, thank you
I usually only use straps for 1RM deadlifts and Heavy shrugs. Otherwise I just use chalk or nothing.

Well with deads I don't use at all. I want grip to be in issue during deads since that's part of the lift. With back lifts, I really want to make sure my back doesn't suffer because my grip wears out too early. This wasn't this case today so I'm really confused as to why I can lift more w/o straps than with.
i didn't use straps the last back workout and saw little difference , they probably have little effect if your forearms are rested ? i still like them though and just feel like i pull harder and concentrate on the back more , i did get less reps but it didn't seem to be the grip
Straps will slip, often making lifts harder. Also, they increase the diameter of what you're gripping, making it harder.
