The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Good morning snack?

Hey guys. I've been drinking this stuff each morning and I don't know anything about nutrition, so I thought I'd ask if this is good -

    it's a shake,
    1 orange
    1 apple
    1 tsp of flax seeds
    1 banana
    1 kiwi
and im not sure how much milk/soy milk my mom puts in...probably about a cup or a cup and a half

I have a glass of this each morning, and I was just curious if there's anything I could add or take out of it that would make it better, or if it's fine the way it is?

Oh, I can't decide whether I should or go on a really clean bulk...if that information is needed...

The flax seeds need to be ground, otherwise they can't be digested.

I think it would be vastly improved, nutrition wise, with a scoop or two of protein. A blend such as Nitrean from AtLarge would probably be best.

Also that's quite a lot of fruit. Fructose (the main sugar in fruit) gets a bit of a bad rep because it preferentially refills liver rather than muscle glycogen. But of course there are other benefits to eating fruit such as fiber, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. Basically, you may want to consider replacing one of the pieces of fruit with, say, some oats.

I don't have enough protein to do use protein in it every morning.

I meant to mention that I don't use all those fruit in one drink - i use 2 or 3 of those kinds.

I didn't know that flax seed needed to be ground - thanks.

And no, I don't drink this in place of breakfast.

    Thanks guys!

Maybe some yoghurt? Although a scoop of protein was my first choice.

I would reccomend the protein powder, but you said you don't have much of it. You know there is the option of the Atlarge stuff, but i use this

I really like this stuff, and price/protein ratio is VERY good for this product.

    Weeeell...

I suggest you read both sides of the debate.

    (Partial) Vindication of Soy

Something to put you off eating soy for a looong time

One side says soy is poison, the other that it's great for you, and they're talking about the same compounds. My take on the whole thing is that if you're going to have it, have it in moderation as part of a varied diet.

Things are going to be different for you as you're a woman. The main criticisms levelled at soy consumption amongst men are things like they're going to grow bitch tits.

I thought soy was more cassein protein, while reg protein powders is whey protein. Cassein digests slower, whey digests faster and more efficiently. If i'm wrong, slap me. And soy is for hippies anyway...

In terms of digestion soy is somewhere in between casein (very slow) and whey (very fast).

In terms of protein quality, here's a handy post courtesy of geoffgarcia's journal. It's mainly focused on other proteins, but there's a comparison table where soy scores reasonably favourably.

That's a lot of sugar with all those fruits at once, especially the banana. I'd say that the orange and apple are both pretty key, but I'd replace the others with something more solid. Although, I'd imagine it won't taste nearly as good with just an orange and an apple.
