The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Moving from a Smith machine to regular bench

This is probably not me yet, but I'm wondering when is a good time to move from a Smith machine to a regular bench press?

I'm figuring possibly another month of my current routine which incorporates Smith flat benches and Smith incline benches before giving a regular bench a go.

Otoh, there's the adage "no time like the present". Heh, maybe I'm a wuss.

What's the reason? You're maxing out the smith?

No reason at all, not in any rush to move from Smith to regular. Just curious, is all. Still working on form and doing things properly, but was wondering if there were any inherent disadvantages to "being safe for as long as possible", i.e., if there's less range of motion possible in doing Smiths for example.

Well aware that Smiths keep things balanced for you as opposed to doing regular benches where it's entirely on you to perform the work.

    Hope that clarifies for you.

soba, that's exactly the same thing I did years ago. I couldn't gain weight on BB bench because my form was just HORRIBLE. I was simply too weak to even have good form. I switched to smith for about half a year and the weight went up a lot. I would just switch when you think you're strong enough, really. It all depends on you. Personally, I switched when I could do 5 reps of 185 on the smith, I think. I just wanted to be able to handle 10 reps of 135 on BB bench.

Try using dumbbells perhaps, should kick in the stabalisers or something.. I never used free weight chest and was all over the place at first, but you fly up the weights pretty quick after that i found

I use the smith whenever I hit a sticking point in my training..I have implememted it on my incline work and it has helped immensely..I agree with Beast you can go to flat BB whenever you feel you have reached the level that you are ready.

How can you work form on a piece of equipment that forces you into a fixed path? You are actually doing the opposite as it's not going to be anything like bb bench.

    Switch ASAP.

If you want to learn bench, you have to bench.

    Thanks for the info, guys.

El P: Point well taken; however, my arms are pipe cleaners and incredibly weak at this point. Very concerned with development of stabilizers and tricep strength, not to mention balance. LOL, I have no wrists -- my hands look outsized compared to my forearms. Case in point: I *tried* mightily to do *one* pushup last chest session and fubared.

May work in regular bench on a gradual basis as things progress, we'll see how it goes.
