The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    DB shrugs

I enjoy doing DB shrugs, but is there any way to help support/grip the DB when using heavy weights? The lactic stops me doing more reps than I want to, and also my right arm turns a shade of purple when I am shrugging (the left one is fine!). Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

I use some wrist wraps that wrap around the bar, when I start going heavy enough to lose grip.

It is good to wait until you need them though, so you don't depend on them and lose wrist strength.
If the bar aint bending your just pretending!!!!

straps, w/o em you cant hold much more then maybe 95s or so for to long of a time w/o your hands giving out, and they usally go way before your traps....also if you dont have them try doing bb shrugs and put your hands on the opposite way, that helps you hold onto it a little better

If the sight of you're arm turning purple bothers you, then don't look at it when you're doing shrugs. Either that or wear long sleaves.
Best way to cheat on deadlifts...

Stand there for a few minutes, then pace back and forth a lot, huff and puff, wait until everybody's looking. Approach the bar. Back off. Approach it again. Back off. Get some water. Chalk up. Approach the bar again. Then spray some more chalk around. Wait until people start losing interest. When nobody's looking, pick it a little off the floor, and slam it down. Jump up and yell "LIGHT WEIGHT BABY". Then give high fives all around. - Belial

Bunk. Its all about training your grip strength. Using nothing but chalk, I can do sets of shrugs with 150lb dumbbells, no problem.

I reccommend that you supplement a push workout(or one that is predominantly so) with serious grip work. Static holds, or do farmers walks on leg day. Forearm size and grip strength often go hand in hand, as well.

Bunk. Thats a word I dont see used often enough. I like it. Im going to use it far more. Also salubrious.

The purple arm....thats probably the main brachial artery and vein getting compressed on that side from the weight/movement/way you are holding yourself during the movement. Does it stop going purple if you hold yourself slightly differently? warmup the shoulder area well first with stretches?

There were some great suggestions for stopping worrying tho...long sleeves, not looking etc. Mine would be to paint that arm a nice fleshtone color before going to the gym if you arent too worried about the arms blood supply whilst shrugging

good post augs- i was gonna say try holding the db's like a half inch further away from your body, if that doesnt work, try in inch foward/ or backwards- my diagnosis is its an artery getting its ass kicked- if those dont work, maybe your artery is just in a bad place on that arm.
