The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

What about this low carb craze?

Does anyone put any stock in it and use that kind of diet? What do you guys think of Coke C2 and Pepsi Edge and other similar products?

I don't think you should be drinking pop, diet or regular, if you're serious about your diet.

    Junk science.
People lose weight, in part, because they don't replace the calories that they drop when they cut out the carbs.
Most Atkins stories are the same... massiver weight loss followed by a plateau, and finally weight gain.
Yup... they finally are able to replace the calories lost.

    Carbs is fuel.
    Fuel is good.
40-60% of your diet, depending on your protein and fat intake.
Weight loss/gain is simply a matter of the math. 3800 calories = a pound.
Power 3800 calories and sit on your butt and most of it will end up around your midsection.
Power 3800 calories and hit the weights and some of it will end up on your arms.

I don't know a single competitive bodybuilder that uses a non carb diet. Lowest I went was 200g per day. and I was 235 pounds with a 4-5% bodyfat reading. I could never hold onto that muscle with zero carbs. Too harsh.

I think low carb works. In fact I know it does and that is how I lost 70 pounds. The problem is all this low carb crapp is comming up which defeats the purpose of the diet. People want to have their cake and eat it too.

All carbs are not created equal....Some are Great (Raw Oats, leafy greens, whole wheat ect....Those are all good low glycemic carbs that are the staple of any bodybuilding diet..Now stuff like white flour, processed anything and simple sugar. The only exception is post workout where you need simple sugars to replenisg glycogen stores, and even then Dextrose is used and maltodextrin not simple sugar.....Low carb does work make no mistake about it,but no carb's will cause you and your body problems...Have you ever tried to diet with no fiber..The bathroom is not a happy place if ya know what I mean....LOL...so throw Atkin's and South Beach diets out the door and follow a C-K-D diet....Refeed's are vital IMO while dieting... :

I agree. Does salad qualify (leafy greens)? Lol while in school I eat tremendous, plate covering salads with sunflower seeds, shredded cheese, and some ranch dressing. I did really well lifting in school too. Did that help?

I think I know what a refeed is. Is it where, while cutting, you take in alot more calories in a day than usual for one day? I think I did that today. About 300-400 more.

South beach is not a low carb diet. Read the book. The goal of the South Beach diet is to wean a person from highly proccessed carbs. If you eat carbs that take longer to digest, you are less likely to over eat. That's the whole idea behind South Beach.

    It works.
Even more effective on a CKD/TKD IMHO, assuming you do it properly (From a weightloss/maintenence perspective in my case).

Maltodextrin is just fine. Same GI, same action in the body.

If your goal is to only drop % BF, and not lose muscle, what is the best diet to follow?

    Hey,

About to finish a my first low carb bulk in a few days. Ive kept my diet strictly to protein, and veggies and I must say I have experienced the best muscle to fat gain ratio yet in comparison to my previous attempts. Speaking from a personal prespective, I put stock in this idea.

Were you consuming fat as well or just protein and veggies?

Good job on the fat ratio to muscle. I don't know if I could do that lol I have always used michelina's rice dishes to help me bulk and they've become a staple of my diet. Damn, I can only eat like one a day they have 240 to 280 calories, depends on the one I'm eating. When I bulked, I'd eat 2-4 every day.

    Hey,

Yea I suppliment fat, vitamins, and whatever else is otherwise lacking in my diet. I like it because I feel as if I eat soo much, yet I am still fairly cut going in to my cutting cycle, I can still see my abs, so this cut will be fairly painless I think.
