    My ankles hurt like hell

    Everytime after I run for like 15 minutes afterwards (probably... maybe even more) my ankles and calfs hurt like hell. Is this from my shoes? I used to run on tredmill before and my legs never did that. I started running on foot (I've got a huge hill in front of my house thats just begging to be concoured everyday or just around the block if I'm not in the right mood). Ever since I started on foot my ankles hurt like hell, even now that I'm back on the tredmill. I used to run a lot a few years ago when I was a kid and I've never had this problem (and never had very good shoes for running, mostly skateboard shoes). My shoes now are pretty beat up. Do I need running shoes? what kind should I get? Are there special shock obsorbing shoes... I'm kinda new to this lol, I've ran a lot in my life but I guess cuz I'm heavier now it takes it's toll on my ankles.

    yeah this seems to happen to me to quite a bit. I sometimes double up socks it helps a little bit not alot. I havent tried any, but maybe Dr. Schol's (SP) makes a pad for a runner in your situation. I also wear raggedy old shoes for running, but maybe a good pair of running shoes might suit you well depending on how often you want to run.

    a supportive pair of running shoes is probably THE most important thing one needs to consider when running regularly. go buy a good pair ... and i suggest you find an actual running store and not footlocker or the like.

    Thanks for the advice but like... what should I look for in a shoe? I'd hate to spend all the money that athletic shoes can cost and find out it's no good. I'm really new to this... I usually just buy shoes for comfort so I'm totally clueless...

    if u go to a specialist store, the people in there should no wht their talking about, and probably no more than us,
    so just go in there, tell them the problem, and they will b able to sort u out most likely...

    whats a specialist store? My city isn't huge so I dunno if we'd have one of those and again I'd like to get some outside opinions because I figure the person selling it to me will most likely reccomend the most expensive pair. I've asked around and someone said that I need to get ankle support so to get shoes that go up past my ankles. I really am clueless...

    Firstly buddy don't run too much on 'beaten up shoes', look after your feet a little.
    I have very bad ankle problems, mostly with my right one which I have fractures twice in the past and I hate it. I get a burning up pain whenever I try running and sometimes even when I do calf raises they start burning up because of the stress through the ankle joint.

    Get some decent runners and see how you go from there. If you think you might have an ankle condition, get it checked out... if that is the case your calves could be sore because they are tense due to trying to protect your ankles..

    go to a specialized running store, a store where they only sell running/training shoes. they make you run on a threadmill and compute/analysie your running style, and from that they find out what kind of shoes you need. I bought some shoes from a specialized store for around $120 (yeah, its expensive but deffinatly worth it), and ive never had problems with my knees after that.

    The advice of the other posters is good - get some decent shoes. The pain you're describing sounds familiar to me, and I have an alignment problem with my feet that causes me to need prescription insoles. If new shoes doesn't fix the problem, see a doctor for a reference to a podiatrist.

    I bought some pumas shoes. They are comfortable. They are light and they do not tight ur feet. They have a specific name, but I cannot remember it. Just go to a pumas store and buy the lightest shoes. Ask for them. I don't have any problem with these shoes so far. About the pain, if you just started to run, it is likely the pain will still continue till they get use to running. Proly ur anckles are weak still, but they will get strong as u keep running. My soccer coach told that, about the weak anckle, to a friend of mine who is recovering from surgery. I am just giving you my coach's thoughts.
