    Deadlilfts and shins

    When doing deads do you guys have the bar actually contacting your shins on the way up, or do you just keep it as close as you can without touching?

    I've been doing them with the bar contacting the shins, but it scrapes them up pretty bad. I don't mind the scraping, but it's a public barbell that I'm using now, so it's not really appropriate to be bleeding on it.
    Is there a significant difference in the ammount I'd be able to lift without contact? Are there any tricks to keeping contact without scraping the skin?


    Also: for martial artists, if you dead with contact to the shin, do you find it has any positive or negative effect on shin conditioning?

    Whenever I do them I don't hit my shins, but I knock up my knees bad!

    I was wondering the same thing, I was thinking maybe wearing those long soccer socks and pulling them all the way up to your knees might help, I haven't tried it out yet though

    i dont scrape my knees going up, but the bar does touch my shins on the way down.

    Close as possible. The occassional scrape is bound to happen. Some people put tape on their shins. Others use long sox.

    Throw a strip of duct tape on your shins or switch to a bar with older knurling on it that is smoother and won't mangle your shins.
