The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    The deadlift: questions inside

    So i started doing deadlifts. I read things liek sumo, romanian, conventional. What do these 3 things mean. I think they are referring to grip. My grip is my left palm facing away from me, one right palm facing towards me. if you can explain thanks!

    sumo = romanian FYI

    also, sumo and conventional refer to your foot stance. Convention is when you have your feet clost together. Sumo is where your feet are wide apart and feet pointed out at a 45 degree angle.

    Conventional = narrowish stance. Bar gripped outside of legs.
    Sumo = wide stance. Bar gripted inside of legs.
    Romanian = ive always thought of them as being similar to stiff legged deads, although im not sure.

    they are not the same. Sumo is a stance, and it's also a full range deadlift. A RDL is a very similar to the SDL or SLDL.

    www.exrx.net is your friend.

    Edit: Especially you GMC!!! I've noticed you've referred to a few exercises incorrectly. Reference exrx early and often.

    Your hand position is called a mixed grip. If you are right-handed then your hand positioning is correct, if left-handed, reverse them. It's better to have your dominant hand overhand.

    Sumo deads will be more of a leg and lats lift, while conventional will place much more emphasis on the lower back. As others have said, sumo is where you grip the bar between your legs, while conventional the hands are outside the legs. Some people sumo with quite a narrow stance still, while others have their toes practically touching the plates. Sumos I believe will be harder to get going off the floor, while conventional most often it's much harder towards the lockout phase.
