The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Do any of you have stories of...

...people doing something amazing(strength wise) in a bad situation?

My mom just told me about something that happened to her cousin. He was driving a tractor, as in huge farm tractor, on the ramp up to the barn. He got to close to the edge and the tractor tipped over. He fell out and the tractor fell on him and pinned him. His dad saw this and ran over and lifted the tractor and pulled him out from under it! Too cool. The cousin lived if you wondered.

I know people get "super strength," or whatever, in such situations. I just wondered if any of you have any stories of your own like this?

Well anecdotal, never really followed up on this one so it's hearsay for now...

Car was rolling over her son, so lady ran over and lifted the car so her son could escape.

Insert your own dramtizations and tall tales into that one...

all I can say is adrenaline does amazing things. In my humble opinion, The body can do anything, regardless of muscle mass, in the right situation. If only we could completely tap into this it would be amazing.........

Edit: One example of the amzing things the body can do... I was born with cerebral palsy and am now a fully functional human being fully capable of everything you are.... point being anything is possible......

I think it is a fairly well documented occurrance, but think people do tend to turn them into tall tales over time. I'm sure, in time, her uncle will have picked up the tractor and threw it to the side, lol. In reality, most of these types of stories involve someone picking up something just enough for someone else to escape. That is totally believable to me. Look at what you can do, lifting wise, when you get really focused. Now imagine if you could tap into the "fight or flight" response. Unfortunately, we can't do that on our own accord. There has to be a stimulas for it to kick in. Although, if you've ever seen Bill Kazmire compete in strongman, he has probably come the closest anyone has to tapping into it mentally.

That's right. I have a cousin who was born with it, she was born way too early and one of her legs is longer than the other. The amazing thing, she now has an IQ of over 120. The more amazing thing, she's 4 years old.

Totally. Anyone hear about that guy who got his arm crushed by a boulder or whatever and he was going to cut it off to get free, but he only broke the bones so he could cut it off and then he was rescued... I think he has a book out there

I believe he DID cut his arm off after breaking the bones, then walked miles to get to help.

I remember seeing a video of a guy lifting a crashed helicoptor to rescue his friend.

My only lame (by comparison) instance of tapping into the whole fight or flight thing was when I had to save my dog from literally running into traffic. I've never been able to catch this damn dog before and she had a good 10 yard head start and was at full gallop, but when I realized she was going to get killed, I was somehow able to run her down and tackle her right before she reached the street and a huge dump truck roared by.

I've never been able to catch her before or since and I don't think I've ever run that fast in my life. Dumb @ss dog.

Only heard stories, but apparently there was a reported car crash close to where I live, where the father managed to get both his wife and children out of the car. After everyone was safe he managed to take a few steps, calmed down, and then dropped dead. Was majorly injured, just didn't register until he got everyone safe.

Could just be a story, but then again, when adrenaline is flying, I suppose it could be perfectly true.

That's what this thread made me think of. I saw it on RealTV or something.

I saw my cousin, one hundred thirty pounds, 5'4", completely untrained in any sort of fighting arts, do some nasty, nasty **** to a concrete wall with his bare hands when he heard that his father was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

I believe one time I read that strength triples when the adrenaline glands let all the adrenaline out at once. That's on avg. though.

yeah, it was in the papers here. but the thing is that he didnt have any feeling in that arm anymore (thats what he said). so cutting it off doesnt sound like all that without the pain-factor playing in.

but still, thats a though mofo that I salute.

1 story of strength. My own, and nothing in comparison with the rest, here goes: My grandparents had pounded on me verbally for hours on a bad week for me and I have a terrible temper in the first place. I can't remember what happened well, but I had had enough and (I don't usually hit things) but I punched through an entire wall. Straight through and my fist came out the other side. Through 2 layers of sheetrock. It was the maddest I've ever been in my life. If I'd had hit a beam it'd have done some nasty ass damage.

I broke 3 knuckles and didn't know I'd hurt myself untill about 10 minutes later, all it felt like was hot. Then 20 min. later it hurt so bad I went to the hospital and they said I had shattered my 3 first knuckles. I can hardly remember what all happened to make me do that, it's the only time I've hit something in my house. I've hit sheetrock since and have barely dented it. I'll never know how I did that to 2 layers.
