The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

WBB contest - biggest gain on a single lift (Bench, Deadlift, or Squat)

Anyone up for it? I was doing a bench contest and the kid bitched out and stopped lifting, and it'd be fun to have one with you guys. The goal of this contest is to see who can put the most lbs on their lift, whether it be squat, deadlift, or bench. Also, to keep us from having to do 1 rep maxes multiple times, let's do a 6 rep max. End date: 12/15/03.

I will go with Bench. On 10/09/03 I had 175x6.

Who wants in? Cutoff for entries this Saturday, 10/18/03.

    Bring it!

    Deadlift: 300 as of 10/11/03
Rear Squat: 220 as of 10/10/03
Bench Press: 160 as of 10/08/03

A little healthy competition is always a good motivator.

Shroud - are those maxes? Are you going to pick a lift for this competition or will you see what produces the highest gain at the end of the competition?

I'm in, Bench-210*6, but it's kind of unfair, the more you lift, the harder it is to put weight on your 6 rep max. Oh well, count me in anyways

EC - Those are the maxes I've managed to put up to date. I've only been seriously back into things for a month or so though so I'm probably in that initial period still where people can make some big gains while their CNS adjusts and their form improves. However, competition is good and I'm willing to participate in some healthy competition on any/all of the 3.

EC - After thinking about it, let's do bench press. I think my numbers for BP are maxes while my squat and deadlift are still seeking their true RM still. I swear I got a 350 deadlift in me even now. If people want to throw down the gauntlet on either of those as well then I'm all for it. I love deadlifts and fully intend to push myself hard on all 3 during the next two months regardless. I've never considered myself real strong in my chest so I'd love to see my numbers move upwards.

Oh yeah....tomorrow is chest/tris for me too so I consider the competition in full swing as of now!

note: I've been pushing my 1 RM the past few weeks so I'm not too sure what my 6 RM is atm.

To keep everyone equal, we should set the requirement that the competition is for raw lifts.

I'll try Deads. I'm sure I can do 6@325. Maybe if I'm lucky I can up my PB to 6@365.

Well I did Chest/Tris today and got 145x6 for flat bench press so that's the starting weight I'll be working from.

I'm in for bench I guess. Found this just before the cutoff, tomm which is my birthday

My last heavy bench day was 200 x 6. So I guess I'm going with a 6 rep max @ 200 to start with

Oooh I'm in for sure on all 3 lifts! Lets see for 6 reps these are my bests...
    Bench - 175lbs X 6
    Deadlift - 225lbs X 6
    Squat - 170lbs X 6

I haven't actually done any of these lifts but I'm confident I can, so I will use these as a starting point. I can hit 170lb X 6 on bench and it's not till failure and my tested 1RM is 210lbs. On deadlift I can do 225lb X 5 but haven't tested anything heavier. On squat I can do 160lb X 8 so 170lb X 6 is doable I think.

OK, in 2 hours, the cut off hits - and so barring any future members wanting in (I guess they COULD come in, but they would be at a disadvantage).

    EdgeCrusher - Bench - 175x6
    Shroud - Bench - 145x6
    thetopdog - Bench - 210x6
    Drew - Deadlift - 305x6
    Max-Mex - Deadlift - 325x6
    HahnB - Bench - 200x6
    Dedicated - Bench - 175x6, Deadlift - 225x6, Squat - 170x6

So, we'll see who can get the highest gain overall and on the individual lift (HahnB vs Thetopdog vs Shroud vs Dedicated vs myself for Bench, Drew vs Max-Mex vs Dedicated for Deadlift, and Dedicated alone on Squat).

    End Date 12/15/03

Damn, pretty soon you'll have a 20 lb gain over us. I'm benching tomarrow, and despite being kinda sick and cutting, I expect to hit 185 or 180 6 times.

This is how I'm training to up my DL:

Total weight for 365x6=2190 lbs. Currently I'm doing (2x9@285=5130 lbs)+(4@385=1480)=6510 lbs. I do the 2 working sets as kind of a hypertrophy set and the last set as a strength set. When the time comes, my body should be ready for the stress of 365. That's my hope anyway.

I have no intention of trying any 6 rep DL's until 12/14 which is 1 or 2 days before the deadline. Highest I will go is 4. Maybe 5..but depends on how I feel. I'm not going to increase grip work since I seriously don't think it will be a factor.
I'm also increasing the weight on my assistance lifts: Romanian Deadlift and Back Extensions.

205 x 6 the day before yesterday, personal best.

I would have liked to get in for deadlift too but I'm not deadlifting till tomorrow, I'll see how it goes.

I have started eating a little more so hopefully that helps. Also I added a day simply for strength work.

    I Benched 185 8 times today, which means I went from 175x6 to 175x9 to 185x8.

So far (I'm only going off of 6 rep maxes):
    HahnB +5 lbs
    thetopdog +5 lbs
    EdgeCrusher +10 lbs

and Max-Mex probably has +10 or +15, but it's hard to tell without the 6 reps.
