I recently started having lower back pain after leg workouts - left side of the lower lumber region with a little pain radiating into left glute. Pain lasts a few days. I had what I think was just a severe strain of the lumber spine back in 1997 while doing squats - took about 3 months and tons of NSAIDS to resolve but seemed to get better.

I guess part of it is that I ma getting older-now 44, but I am getting worried about doing leg work for fear of a back injury. I have reduced the weight on free-weight squats to not exceed 130lbs, and I now use a Body Solid vertical press instead. I dont want to stop my leg work - want to keep the quads and glutes that I've built over the years.

Any suggestions on alternative exercises that will keep what I have/allow me to build more?
