olympic versus powerlifts (on your joints)

i have an appointment today to learn olympic lift form, but last night someone told me that it's really hard on your joints compared to powerlifting. i'm only interested in olympic lifting because i have heard it's better for explosivity and sports and stuff. basically that it's strength that's more useful. any thoughts?

I've actually never hear much of people having joint issues when doing oly lifts.(other than wrists, sometimes knees - not often that i know of)

i never actually planned to stop the powerlifts; i just got back, i think i'm gonna start doing power cleans, i think that's what they're called. basically fast deadlift and then you catch on your chest. dunno.
