The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

STANDING BB CURLS vs. PREACHER CURLS

    How about some help here.

When I do standing bb curls I use very strick form. I have found that I can do almost as much on the preacher bench as I can do performing standing curls.

So someone tell me why standing curls for the biceps is a better overall mass builder then seated bb preacher curls?

It might not be. A curl is pretty much a curl.
    Squats work better than supplements.
"You know, if I thought like that, I'd never put more than one plate on the bar for anything, I'd never use bands or chains, I'd never squat to parallel or below, and I'd never let out the slightest grunt when I lift. At some point in your lifting career (assuming you're planning on getting reasonably strong and big), you're going to have to accept that most people think you are some kind of freak." -Sensei
"You're wrong, and I have a completely irrelevant pubmed abstract that may or may not say so." - Belial

Are you using an Olympic or straight bar for both? For standing I use either the straight Olympic or one slightly shorter; no reason. Preacher, I've used ez (wide grip) and short straight bar + reverse preacher curls; this one will really squeeze 'em tight. Since youre doing the standard ones strict form & it's almost impossible to do a non strict preacher; unless it's a partial rep, then maybe there isn't a lot of difference It's variety. Do 'em both if you like 'em.

Hey..I've just started using my new olympic bar for curl to throw some variety in with my dumbell and EZ. What is the correct width for the hands to be at on the olympic when curling? Also, is there any difference in using the inner or outer bends in the EZ bar? I always use the inner, but I've thought about trying the outer. The outer seems to hurt a bit more on the sides of my bicep, if that's even possible.

You get a fuller range of motion with a standing curl, since your arms are propped forward on preachers. Because of this, you'll work your biceps differently on both exercises. Also, you are lifting more on your preachers due to two things: A) with your elbows supported by a preacher-bench, you use less stabalizers and the bicep is more isolated and B) preachers have about 60-70% of the range of motion that standing curls do...you do the math. IMO, standing curls are the meat and potatoes of curls. I really like bent over DB concentration curls after I've finished my standing BB curls.

    Bicep Brachii

Anyone who has done preachers can testify that you don't get that massive bicep peak pump afterwards, or at least I don't.

i usually begin my biceps training by doing preacher curl, then either standing, sitting or reclining DB curl, follow by a widegrip curl, and usually finish with overhand grip curl to hit the forearms.

And yes i agree that standing curl give you that extra pump. It just feel nice to see yourself walking around the gym with your "guns" loaded. hehehe.
