The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Where do weak arms end and "guns" begin?

What's the magic number for guns?

How do you measure arms? With the forearm extended and the bicep stretched out or with the forearm in a 90 degree flexing posture? Do you measure with a bit of a pump or with the muscle in a "normal" state?

I do it in the middle of the bicep with it flexed. Just make sure to measure in the same exact spot every time like ddegroff said.

What's the magic number for guns?
What size guns do you want?

It really depends on the person, too. A 17" arm on someone that's 5'4 with a small frame will look pretty damn big. A 17" arm on someone that is 6'6 with a big frame, on the other hand, will not be very impressive looking.

You're all right of course, everything is relative, and health is about feeling good, not impressing other people. I was wondering about this term "guns" though, I thought there might be a more concrete definition for it.

O.K., I just went and measured to try to get an idea what would look big on me. I'm 6'3. I've got one arm that's 14" and one that's 15" From the side they look like I've done a little lifting, but not so much from the front. 17" would be noticeably larger, but not really dramatic. 20" would be pretty big. I guess I'm a long way from achieving that I don't think I'd want to be any bigger.

I think anything over 18" is incredibly impressive.

18 is a good number to shoot for. I've got no idea how long it will take to build up that much size, but it doesn't sound impossible.

no matter how big your arms are, you should never use the term "guns" to describe them.

Yeah, I was less than 120lbs, lol

    Now 170lbs, arms are 14"

edit: by the way that 9" was untensed (as if it mattered lol)

Hey, I didn't say I was going to go around boasting about my "guns." That would only get me in trouble. outnumber

Nothing wrong with using it as a motivational tool though, right? I'll be thinking "big guns" every time I look at that barbell.
