The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Before and after workout shakes

I am a little confused about before and after workout shakes. I have read that you are suppose to drink a protein shake 1 hr before lifting and then a post workout shake with protein and carbs. I have also read that you should sip a drink while working out and then another after working out. Any one able to shed some light on this. Thanks.

It depends. What is your bodytype? What are your goals?

In general, I would recommend drinking some whey and simple carbs pre workout. And whey post workout (more carbs if you are bulking). During workout drinks are not a bad idea, but not crucial.

I usually take a scoop of whey 1 hour before workout with complex carbs so it lasts threw out my workout. I am getting great energy with this comination. The post workout you would go to a more simple carb with protein.

Yeah, that would seem more logical than taking in simple sugars before the workout, since fast-acting carbs often have a rebound effect and quickly leave someone sluggish. I suppose that's due to an over-release of insulin from high-glycemic carbs, whereas the complex carbs allows insulin levels to remain more stable.

i doubt eating any "complex" carbs (food) right before you workout would have any impact on your workout seeing as how it is still digesting....

supplying you with continuous nutrients instead of burning out quickly with simple carbs I think it has it's benefits. I've noticed the difference.

unless you are working out for a few hours.... a simple carb drink prior would be fine.

Another thought about complex carbs before workout. If you have that continuous flow of glucose you will also have it post workout which can almost eliminate the need for simple carbs. Personally I don't ever see a need for simple carbs if you have that continuous flow of nutrients. Just my thoughts though.
