The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Upper/Lower Body 4 day weekday split. Need critique.

    -
*OLD THREAD BUMPED. LOOK FURTHER DOWN*

I was originally on another 4 day split (shoulder/bi, legs, chest/tri, back) and experienced some real good gains. However gains in the upper back, chest, triceps, and hamstrings have almost seized. I made this split, but am very unfamiliar with how an upper/lower body split should look like, both volume and exercise wise. I also realize lower body days may be lacking in comparison to upper, yet I am unsure what else to include or increase. Please critique, thanks.

Note that I am mainly training for size (if that matters).

    MON – Upper body
    • 4 sets BB Bench Press
    • 4 sets Bentover BB Rows
    • 3 sets DB Shoulder Press
    • 2 sets OH DB Extentions
    • 2 sets BB Curls

    TUE – Lower body
    • 4 sets Squats
    • 3 sets Leg Press
    • 3 sets Leg Curls
    • Plyometrics

    THUR – Upper body
    • 4 sets DB Bench Press
    • 4 sets Pullups
    • 3 sets Seated Military Press
    • 2 sets Dips
    • 2 sets DB Hammer Curls

    FRI – Lower Body
    • 4 sets Deadlifts
    • 3 sets Lower Back Extentions
    • 3 sets Calf Raises

Sounds good but I think you could fit more volume in there, but maybe that doesn't fit in with your goals. That's really the only thing I would change, other stuff looks great.

I think you are missing some isolated tricep work? I mean, you have benching for upper body, but maybe throw in a French Press, Pressdowns, or Skullcrushers?

Thanks Superior_Will for the volume tips. If you could copy and paste my workout into a reply and change the volume to what you see fit, or tell me what specific things I should change that would be great man.

    Maybe this:

    MON – Upper body
    • 2 sets BB Bench Press
    • 4 sets Bentover BB Rows
    • 4 sets DB Shoulder Press
    • 4 sets OH DB Extentions
    • 4 sets BB Curls

    TUE – Lower body
    • 2 sets Squats
    • 4 sets Leg Press
    • 4 sets Leg Curls
    • Plyometrics

    THUR – Upper body
    • 4 sets DB Bench Press
    • 4 sets Pullups
    • 4 sets Seated Military Press
    • 4 sets Dips
    • 4 sets DB Hammer Curls

    FRI – Lower Body
    • 2 sets Deadlifts
    • 4 sets Lower Back Extentions
    • 4 sets Calf Raises

I would say to give this a try. I've done something like this in the past and hypertrophy was great.

I see far too much pressing/push work in proportion to pulling work. Otherwise, it's okay.

Thanks! Sounds good Will, but any specific reason that the compound movements were lowered?

Mix: Ahh, I see what you mean. Maybe take out the DB OH Press and put in something like Rear-Delt Flies?

I agree with Mix, although I didn't look at push/pull proportion. That's why we have more than 1 member lol.

Everything following the big 3 is auxilliary, and isolation for the most part. If you go full throttle on the big compound movements right away, you're pooped for the rest of the workout.

Maybe istead of dips or pullups you could throw in seated rows. Just personal preference speaking there

Lol, if it's just personal preference I'll stick with the pullups and dips. Thanks for the help Will.

I'd add SLDL's to Tuesday after the squats. I'd also go 4 worksets on the bench and deads. Also watch how you are recovering. If you find you're still sore you could start light and heavy days.

Why would you do 2 sets for chest, and 4 sets for bi's and tri's each??

Or 2 sets of squats and 4 sets of leg curls??

The compound lifts working the major muscle groups should be a priority in any routine.
"It is often said, mainly by the "no-contests", that although there is no positive evidence for the existence of God, nor is there evidence against his existence. So it is best to keep an open mind and be agnostic. At first sight that seems an unassailable position, at least in the weak sense of Pascal's wager. But on second thought it seems a cop-out, because the same could be said of Father Christmas and tooth fairies. There may be fairies at the bottom of the garden. There is no evidence for it, but you can't prove that there aren't any, so shouldn't we be agnostic with respect to fairies?"

    Richard Dawkins

"Out of all of the sects in the world, we notice an uncanny coincidence: the overwhelming majority just happen to choose the one that their parents belong to. Not the sect that has the best evidence in its favour, the best miracles, the best moral code, the best cathedral, the best stained glass, the best music: when it comes to choosing from the smorgasbord of available religions, their potential virtues seem to count for nothing, compared to the matter of heredity. This is an unmistakable fact; nobody could seriously deny it. Yet people with full knowledge of the arbitrary nature of this heredity, somehow manage to go on believing in their religion, often with such fanaticism that they are prepared to murder people who follow a different one."

    Indeed.

If he's 'pooped' from the compound lifts, thats fine...but thats the exact reason why he should not be doing 4 sets per isolation move.

2-4 sets depending on how heavy he is going for compound movements.

1-2sets on isolation lifts unless he's well experienced and has a lot of muscle mass to be working with.

I went over it with some of the advanced members over AIM (thanks jeff, casey). This is what we came up with (will be guaging volume by how I feel; if it is too much for me to handle I might just do bis on one of the days and tris one of the days, or something like that):

    MON – Upper body
    • 4 sets BB Bench Press
    • 2 sets DB Flies
    • 4 sets Bentover BB Rows
    • 3 sets OH DB Extentions
    • 3 sets BB Curls

    TUE – Lower body
    • 4 sets Squats
    • 3 sets SLDL
    • 2 sets Leg Extentions
    • 2 sets Leg Curl

    THUR – Upper body
    • 4 sets Pullups
    • 2 sets Seated Cable Row
    • 4 sets DB Bench Press
    • 3 sets Dips
    • 3 sets DB Hammer Curls

    FRI – Lower Body
    • 4 sets Deadlifts
    • 3 sets Lower Back Extentions
    • 4 sets Calf Raises
    • Plyometrics

I'd trade the leg curls out for something like SLDL. Also, one of the leg days you could do hack squats, sumo deadlifts, or suitcase deadlifts.

Also, I'd be sure to change the parameters for each day (which I'm sure you are, just making sure though.) Maybe have a heavy 7x5 day, 80% 1rm with 60s rest, and one day of 4x8 with 120s rest.

    Thanks guys.

Yes, on one upper body day and one lower body day I will be focusing on heavier weight with less reps, and the other days vice-versa. Right now I'm trying to keep it simple for myself, since I'm still doing research on what % of 1RM is considered heavy and what is considered light, and other stuff relating to that.

If the routine is too much for me volume wise, I may consider lowering it to something similar to what ryuage posted. As for now though, this is it:

    MON – Upper body
    • 4 sets Pullups
    • 2 sets Seated Cable Row
    • 4 sets DB Bench Press
    • 3 sets Dips
    • 3 sets BB Curls

    TUE – Lower body
    • 4 sets Squats
    • 3 sets SLDL
    • 2 sets Leg Extentions
    • 2 sets Leg Curl

    THUR – Upper body
    • 4 sets BB Bench Press
    • 2 sets DB Flies
    • 4 sets Bentover BB Rows
    • 3 sets OH DB Extentions
    • 3 sets DB Hammer Curls

    FRI – Lower Body
    • 4 sets Deadlifts
    • 3 sets Lower Back Extentions
    • 4 sets Calf Raises

    *LOOK HERE!*

Alright. I've noticed a lack in my shoulders, trap and tricep size. I'm taking it all bicep now, since they are far from lagging. I threw in BB Shrugs on DL day since my traps get pretty blown up from the DLs anyways. I also occasionally do more calf raises on Friday's lower body session, if I feel they can take more volume. Looking for size. I need a critique on this routine now:

    MON – Upper body
    • 4 sets Pullups
    • 2 sets Bentover BB Row
    • 4 sets DB Bench Press
    • 3 sets Skullcrushers SS CGBP
    • 3 sets Incline Rear-Delt Flies

    TUE – Lower body
    • 4 sets ATF Squats
    • 4 sets Leg Press
    • 4 sets Leg Curl
    • 4 sets Calf Raises

    THUR – Upper body
    • 4 sets BB Bench Press
    • 2 sets Cable Flies
    • 4 sets Seated Cable Row or T-Bar Row
    • 3 sets Dips
    • 3 sets Arnold Presses SS Lateral Raises

    FRI – Lower Body/Core
    • 4 sets Deadlifts
    • 3 sets Lower Back Extentions
    • 3 sets BB Shrugs
    • 3 sets Decline Crunches
    • 3 sets Standing Ab Pulldowns
EDIT: Realized that may be too much volume. Here's another version:

    MON – Upper body
    • 3 sets Pullups
    • 2 sets Bentover BB Row
    • 3 sets DB Bench Press
    • 3 sets Skullcrushers SS CGBP
    • 3 sets Incline Rear-Delt Flies

    TUE – Lower body
    • 4 sets ATF Squats
    • 3 sets Leg Press
    • 3 sets Leg Curl
    • 4 sets Calf Raises

    THUR – Upper body
    • 3 sets BB Bench Press
    • 2 sets Cable Flies
    • 3 sets Seated Cable Row or T-Bar Row
    • 3 sets Dips
    • 3 sets Arnold Presses SS Lateral Raises

    FRI – Lower Body/Core
