Thread: How impressive is a 315lb bench press?

    How impressive is a 315lb bench press?

    My current 1 rep max is 225lbs, which, I don't care what anyone says, is impressive to a non gym goer. As a 6'4" ectomorph, with long arms, I'm anything but ideal for benching (or squatting), but I've worked hard to get where I'm at now. My eventual goal is a 315lb bench. I see this as a fairly distant reality, given my current lack of progress in that area. My question is; how rare is a 315lb bench press in gym goers? It's a vague question I know. Ultimately my point is, that being able to bench almost two full grown men, is very impressive, and that it's only the existence of the excetionally strong that seems to make a 315lb bench press seem run of the mill, when in fact it is, by general standars, extremely impressive. Don't you think?

    IMO almost any trainee can hit 315 with patience, knowledge, and dedication.

    i think it's impressive. 225 is pretty impresssive to me. 200 is my goal by summer time. then hopefully i'll hit 225 before school starts again in september.

    i think you can do it though. keep working.

    depends on how big you are and what forum you ask in.

    If you weigh 220 pounds and posting in powerlifter forum after 5 years of trianing then its not very impressive.

    If your 140 pounds and been trianing 6 months in the powerlifting forum then its far more impressive.
    my exprience - joined gym 10 years ago, 6 1/2 years hard weight training exprience.

    personally i think that anyone who puts in the effort to get a high bench, is impressive, no matter what the weight is, if you put in the dedication, ill give you props.

    but personally i feel that 315 is impressive, but certainly not rare

    Most people will never bench 315 pounds.

    I dont think that he is trying to discourage him, I think that he is saying that it is impressive because few people bench 315.

    I agree w/ brotherofiron that 315 is impressive, but not rare.

    but still, he shouldnt try and discourage him, you can get to 315, i know i will be there as will many others on this site...someday

    everyone has their own idea on what impressive is... it pretty much depends on where your current strength level. but i think 315 is a strong bench and definately something worth working for.

    315 is when you can START saying you have a good bench, but I wouldn't throw it in anyones face at this point.

    315 is VERY impressive to 99.9% of the population. However for the people you would like to impress, this would mearly be respectable.

    spite and reverse physocology can be more motivating.

    though the original psoter did ask how common this is and most people will not do this. Most will not achieve this due A) lack of motivation B) lack of knowledge. C) not inline with there goals.
    though there are some people who just alck the genetics to get there.

    Andre agassi, supposedly, hits a 1RM at around 315lb. (as heard on the telly, dont quote me :P
    That, would be impressive to see, at his body weight and age.

    225 is still a great bench. 4 plates plus oly bar is sweet.

    I think 315 is impressive. Not so much a 1RM but if you can get it 4 or more times clean then yeah I think it is.

    Even 275 is prett impressive. Although most of the population will not reach 315 or even 275 for that matter because of reasons stated by 'body' I find it impressive. It's when I see others hitting 405 when I break my concentration to keep an eye on them, just to see what the rest of their lifts are like.

    Hey, i'm a tall "ectomorph" too. It's hard as hell for people like us to get our bench up. But ya, 315 is pretty impressive in my oppinion. I also agree with CC though.

    If you're including the entire population then 315 is a lot of weight to use on any exersise. I say no matter how you look at it if you can bench 315lbs you're a strong guy. Sure, there are stronger out there-but that doesn't mean 315lbs is easy to bench press.

    my definition of impressive is if you can outlift your last week lift..that's impressive. When i first started lifting, i was benching 90lbs. Now i can do 225 x 5, so yes that number is impressive to me. But when i compare my lift to other... it is nothing.

    That should be the best motivation that someone could ask for, and it was also very truthful. Most people will never bench 315. Will most pro-bodybuilders bench 315? You bet.

    It seems like a lot when you first start out, but once you get there the impressiveness wears off and you start setting your sights on 405

    405 thats my goal at 27 wish I had trained harder in the past seing paul senior from the show orangecountychoppers bench 405 at 55 was interesting always wondered how much he could bench.

    It's true though, it's really not that difficult if you lift on a consistent basis. I did it after a little more than 1.5 years of lifting, and I'm a naturally skinny guy that started out with a 115lb max bench, and I dont' even train for strength, I'm more of a bodybuilder. I would imagine that people who are natrually stocky could get to that milestone faster than I did

    I hit 405 and now I got my sights set on 495.

    I also wanna hit 405x6-8 reps!!\

    Currently I can only get it twice.
