I start every leg day with 2 warm up sets and 4 work sets of squats. I don't go that heavy, I aim for between 8 and 12 reps on every set. The problem is, once I get home from the gym, the back of my neck where the bar rests is swollen and red and hurts when is touched. Does this happen to anyone else and is it normal? I know my form is correct when performing squats but the bump on the back of my neck is pretty big. Thanks for your help.
You shouldn't be resting the bar on your neck. It should really be back resting in the grove between your rear delts and your traps. Experiment with some light weights until you find that grove and your squatting experience will be much more enjoyable, albeit torturous on your legs (but not your neck).

Second Drew your bar placement is probably not correct. Ask an experienced lifter to take a look. I always red spots on my shoulders from squats (pressure from the bar) thats normal but not swollen or hurt.
Remember, to get big, you have to get strong. The two are interconnected. Lift heavy, work hard, and size will come. Like night follows day. It works. Arnold

It helps me to keep my traps flexed a bit. It spreads the load out over a bigger area, and not just one spot on your neck. I'm skinny, so if I can flex enough to support the weight, anyone can.
