The things you WISH you would have done earlier...

Recently I've been thinkin about how much there is to being a successful bodybuilder. And I'm not talkin about a pro, just reaching our goals. From diet, to excercises, to rest, theres just so many things included. But anyway, I was just wondering for you more advanced lifters out there, or anyone that can contribute, I just have a question for you. Is there anything that you wish someone would have told you when you were just starting out? Or things that you wish you would have done earlier?

Ive been lifting for a year, and I can start out by saying that I wish I would have kept a workout log since the begining. I just started a log. This way I have incentives to look at those numbers and increase them every week. So anyone who hasnt started a log, do it, it will help a lot. Anyone else have anything they wish they would have started doing earlier??

I agree, for me keeping a log is key. I wish I would have also eaten for the first two years. . a lot.

That diet is almost everything, and that the right diet is NOT the Canada food guide.

That I would get smaller and tighter from lifting, and softer and squishier from doing nothing but cardio.

That sex would be WAAAY more fun if I got stronger... :evillaugh

(And that I'd WANT it waaay more if I did heavy squats...)

I wish I would have eaten correctly from the beginning and trained properly. Wish I would have been more active in sports as a kid so I'd have had a better foundation when I started.

I hate to say I would change anything, because I learned more from my failures than from my success.

that said, I would have progressed far more quickly if I had not gotten all of my information from glossy mags, and instead focused on the basics. That includes nutrition - there was a time when I thought a bagel counted as a meal.
    Squats work better than supplements.
"You know, if I thought like that, I'd never put more than one plate on the bar for anything, I'd never use bands or chains, I'd never squat to parallel or below, and I'd never let out the slightest grunt when I lift. At some point in your lifting career (assuming you're planning on getting reasonably strong and big), you're going to have to accept that most people think you are some kind of freak." -Sensei

I think my biggest mistake early on was not eating enough.

And trying to do my first cut at 6'2" 185 lbs.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I wish I was a curl jockey back in high school, becuase now the rest of my body grows but my arms don't keep up. I think I would look more symmetric if I had focused on arms only while I was younger

Alrighty then! I wished I would have start lifting at an earlier age, I know alot of people start when their in highschool, college, or in their early 20's. I wished I would have started about 13-14, and kept a log for evidence of what is increasing. Eating right is probably the biggest concern though. If I ate right, it would make my life easier right now!

That's a good way to put it, if you changed something you might have not wanted to be active in lifting and cardio.
