    Bench Shirts

I'm curious how these things work. What about them adds so much extra weight onto your bench?

They provide a lot of support at the bottom of the lift, and in some cases throughout the entire ROM.

The one I have makes it about impossible to touch anything under 315 to my chest, and even then it takes some work until a good bit heavier. It's like a spring effect when you reverse it.

a bench shirt is like a spring...when the weight comes down...its cocked...and when you push the extra spring from the shirt allows you to up your weight...Useless for anything but competition

Well, it is FOR competition, you know...

I know I keep saying this, but a powerlifting FAQ is really needed at this forum - you have so many people who visit that would benefit from it...

It wouldn't help. They'd read it like the creatine sticky, or the how to eat sticky, or the anabolics sticky...dip****s don't read, they just post.

I'm sure you're right, but then at least people could just type "Read the FAQ". I understand that telling them to do a search is essentially the same thing, but a beginner could be overwhelmed when they get 40 different thread-options when they do a search for "bench shirts".

If you want to know how effective they can be, look at my sig. Some shirts work differently than others. Poly's tend to have more "spring" off the bottom but are tougher to master, as you have to find just the right groove to use it effectively. Denim or canvas shirts tend to be more forgiving formwise, but provide more support than they do spring. They each have their advantages.

Also, more a double-ply will give you more than a single-ply because there is more material, making the shirt stiffer. Double-ply's are illegal in some PL federations, though.

Learn the basics of powerlifting, equipment is something you can figure out along the way. Shirts are not mandatory.

Bench shirts shouldn't even be used unless your competing or your stuck on a plateau.

Agreed. You should only use them just before a competition to get used to it, since they do take some getting used to. I do RAW benching most of the time.
