What is the purpose of the platform in the straight legged deadlift in the video shownhere?
As far as I can see it is serving no purpose in this video.
Am I okay to not use a platform, or is it a neccisity that I find something to stand on?
Enables a larger range of motion if you have the flexibility, but it's not necessary.

If some people are really flexible they may not feel it work as well just going down to bar height, the platform will work allow them to go down farther and give a better ROM. Personally, I have trouble just reaching the bar without the platform.
