The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Shrug bar or straight for shrugs....

My shoulders are pretty wide & I am always trying to beef up my traps to avoid that damned blocky look! I love using the shrug bar at the gym as the plates are directly on each side with your hands pulling up at your side. Seems a much more natural hand position.
Now, with my work running late most days, I am trying to work out at the house and using a straight bar with palm down grip just does not "feel" as effective as the other. The center of gravity is WAY-Y-Y different (obviously) also when the weight is in front of you....seems higher risk for screwing up my back....again.
Any thoughts....? Is one form of the shrug more effective for building the traps than another?...

I think that one way of doing it is better than the other. Obviously if you feel that you are getting a better work out from one way than it probably is better. For you at least.

You ever try using dumbells to do shrugs with? Basically same as the 'machine' you were using.

    Also, are you doing deads?

yea dumbbells are only an option in the beginning. I can shrug a lot of weight and bb is really the only option

I wish my gym had a trap bar...

both of the shrugs effective for building the traps. what ever feels better for you, don't do an exersice if it doesn't feel right. you go to the gym to get bigger not to hurt yourself.

you can shrug a DB or BB there both hit the traps. I like the BB but thats me, many other people here like the DB.

That's ok. I quit my gym and am now working out at work. They have 50 lb dumbells max.

When I train traps directly, which is rare nowadays, I prefer db shrugs. I also started doing them kneeling down recently, to make sure the legs did not get involved. They hit mine plenty hard, but I think my trap development is mostly from heavy deads and rows.
