    measuring body fat

I was at the story today and saw a scale that also measured body fat. I had to question the accuracy of these things, but thought I'd ask you guys anyways. Even if the number isnt very accurate, it could show change i guess.

Whats the general opinion on these things? The gym at school dosnt offer body fat testing unless you hire a trainer

I've had it done a few times by a pro. I haven't tried it myself yet.

Personal trainers aren't usually rocket scientists. It can't be THAT bad!

I looked up caliper prices, and I noticed two things.

    1) There are skin fold calipers and digital calipers. Anyone know from personal experience how useful/accurate one is vs. the other?

    2) Price range was about $20 for low end skin fold calipers and $60 for low end digital calipers to about $220 high end skin fold calipers and $240 for high end digital calipers. Again, from personal experience, worth the money or complete waste of a hard earned dollar?

I'd also like to know how hard calipers are to use, maybe if measuring yourself digital would be the easier and more reliable method?

    Thanks!

I've got a Tanita too. It says I'm about 24-25% bodyfat, but the test with calipers I recently had put me at about 16%. I think its just like those charts that say if you are above average weight in proportion to your height than you must be obese. They aren't intended for bodybuilders or athletes.

Tanita goes by the relative differences in resistance to electrical current of muscle and fat. Muscle holds more water than fat. More water = less resistance = lower bodyfat according to Tanita.

Which means you appear leaner after a carbup than when you're depleted.

    I know.

the other thing is, do i really want to spend this much money on something that wont help me?

Knowing i have great or ****ty bf% wont change the fact that im either a chiseled greek god or homer simpson.

On the other hand, watching progress is very motivating, and its hard to see small changes in BF with the naked eye. If i posted a picture could anyone give me a ballpark, or is that a ******ed idea.

Oh, so that why when I take a drink in the morning I lose bodyfat. If only it was really that easy.

Calipers, 15 bucks: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/acc/accu.html I'm guessing you're at the point where underwater-testing isn't needed. So these should do the trick.

Or jsut go to a gym and offer 'em 10 bucks to do your body fat. It could work.

I might have to post a picture because I honestly have no clue what my BF% is. I'm 6'4, 210 pounds. I'll post a picture soon if you all can give me an idea.

Remember you don't have as much muscles as these guys though. It'd be easier to tell if you had bigger abs to be seen...

I got those bodyfat scales, i heard that they always over-estimate you bf% (or maybe i just made that up cos mine keep telling me I'm over 30% fat ).
anyway, I always weigh myself at the same time of day and just use them as a reference to see how it changes, not really bothered about the actual numbers as much as how it actually looks innit.

I find its a bit fiddley to use them. When I do, I end up taking lots and lots of measurements, because it keeps chaning eventually I notice one result has come up the most, and i take that as my measurement.
