Since he's Asian and everyone is saying "Go Steve!", I'm guessing it's Steve Wong, not Gene Rychlak...

It looks like it but I cant tell for sure, Even if he wasnt Im sure it was enough weight to where even if he were using thumbs it would pry his hands open..

The caption on the video says "He pissed off his spotters before this major event."

Is it wrong that I laugh every time I watch that?

His legs look like toothpicks... like if you took a big potato and stuck two toothpicks in it.

Oh and he was not using a thumbless grip. You can clearly see his thumbs.

Does he even squat or deadlift?

I mean, I know I can't bench 900 pounds, but he looks quite imbalanced.

Steve Wong benches in the 800s. He's a strong SOB. I don't know what his squat and deadlift are, but my guess is that they are pretty respectable. In any case, most powerlifters and bench specialists aren't really interested in opinions about how they look.
It's the bench shirt that caused him to lose the weight, not his grip.

Sensei could you explain how his bench shirt caused him to lose the weight? I know nothing about equipment thats the reason I am asking.

And is this sort of thing common?

Bench shirts (especially advanced ones) have a "groove", a path of MOST resistance, a 'sweet spot', 'a bubble', that will make it harder to touch and give you the most rebound.

If the bar comes down off of that groove or slips out of the groove, it will be hard to track the weight back onto the groove - if you're using huge amounts of weight, you can pretty much forget about it.

edit: It's not that common, but in any given contest you can pretty much plan on seeing at least one person dump the weight on themselves.

Well, I wouldn't say that the bench shirt caused him to lose the weight. I didn't see or hear it rip (or burst, actually -- it can sound like a gunshot). However, the shirt let him handle a ton more weight than he could raw, and if you lose the groove at all, it will go straight to hell.

With this much weight and a quick failure, there is nothing the spotters can do except pull it off after the fact.

edit: Sensei beat me to it.

I understand the powerlifting mentality of not caring about aesthetics.

However, you do get larger as you get stronger (for the most part). With legs like those I can't see a respectable amount of weight being squat. I realize this is off topic, since I assume Wong is a bench specialist, but I was simply making an offhand observation. Though I'm curious to know if anyone have stats for the other two big lifts on Wong.

That's what he gets for using a bench shirt.

It might not be meant as a joke. A lot of people don't seem to understand that spotter or no 800 lbs is going to go wherever it wants. How strong would a spotter have to be to easily absorb his end of the bar wtihin a half second of it happening on an explosive failure like that to keep it from moving?

    I imagine there's a difference between deadlifting 400, holding up 400, and *catching* 400.

the bench shirt is so strange, why dont they just let the spotters lift in, no difference, the bench shirt gives 50lbs, each spotter 50lbs...stupid stuff.

I'd swear that was posted on here when I first Joined.
