The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Should I squat and deadlift?

Allright, this is kind of worring me now.

    http://www.wannabebigforums.com/showthread.php?t=74316
Read from post #11 and down. Some people are saying I should squat/deadlift and some people are saying I should not. What do you think? I am only (yes only, my dad said he wishes he was a kid again..and enjoy it while it last, I will probably beleive him one day) 15 years 6 months of age. I am 5'7.5" inches and..168 lb (I love writing that over and over and over.) So what do you guys think?

If you have to ask, you don't deserve to do them. My vote is for don't squat, don't deadlift.

Both is both. Squats are legs and back (and arms and neck and shoulders and abs and lats and everything!) Deads are legs and back and abs and shoulders and neck and traps and well, everything!)

    Why wouldn't you do them??????????????????????????

Care to explain to me how squats work shoulders, biceps, triceps, or lats?

    Dude, you are an ass.

But as everyone suggest, do both of them... However, if I had to pick, I would go with Squats. But they are both so important.

Well, he might have exaggerated... He problably means it works your traps because you have to flex them to keep the bar a bit lighter on your C7 if you are using high bar (That is what I do) and it definately works your abs. As for lats, well, I am not sure how that would get in there or the biceps... Who knows

Is it a falicy that weight lifting at a very young age can damage your growth and other factors of your developing body? (possibly joints and other bodily systems that still arn't fully developed yet) Not that 15 is too young to be going hardcore lifting I'm just curious. Any input

Yes it's a 'fallacy' (notice the spelling) and also a 'myth'.

You are possibly more susceptible to injury while growing, which is why training should be done with well below maximum weight, but it won't slow your growth in any way that I'm aware of.

If anything, incorporation of properly performed squats and deadlifts should help correct posture issues.

Don't fool yourself man. You aren't stimulating any of the muscles I named during squats.

Do one of those electro tests on your delts, arms, neck, shoulders, abs, etc. while you're doing heavy squats and you'll understand. Watch a powerlifter's bicep when he squats and tell me squats don't stimulate those muscles...

Anything that works your posterior chain that hard works everything to some degree, that's a fundamental piece of knowledge for weightlifting.
