The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Lower back problem

Sometimes (not always, oddly enough) when squatting, I get a pain in my lower back.. Should I lay off squatting for a bit (I really don't want to.. for an exercise I came in hating/fearing I'm kinda enjoying it) or is there some sorta way to warm up my back before I squat (right now, all I'm doing is stretching legs then starting with light squats and going up to my normal weight)..? Next question.. That little block that you put under your heel, does that help take the pressure of the lower back? (don't use it now, but remember someone making mention of that in a post on here.. a post I can't find anymore)

That's about it.. unless there's something else I should be asking.

I have the same problem you do! I have back pain on my lower right side. I keep on injuring it, I had to finally cut squats for my normal routine. Get on a leg press with a steep angle and there an OK replacement for squats. Doesn't hurt your back at that.

Is the pain a muscular pain or a joint/ligament pain? If its muscular try warming up your back more, if its not then go to your doc befor you squat or deadlift again.

I know how ya feel, mine wasn't something I always felt but I hurt my lower back squatting with a lil too much weight and it hasn't been the same since, I'm just gonna take about 6 months off of squats. Better to have small legs for a half a year than to sit in a wheel chair for a lifetime : )

The lower back pain could be a form problem. You might want to have an experienced squatter watch you just to make sure you're doing them right. As for the block under the heels, they do nothing for the back and shouldn't be used at all IMO.

    gymtime, welcome to the board

    1) might want to lay off squats and strengthen the erectors

    2) check your form

    3) warm up thoroughly

Dear Lord. You're a mod here? What have I gotten myself into. Does this mean I can't ever flame you?

Yes, be afraid. Be very afraid.

Actually, the mod position is fairly new... I'm not sure I have the cojones to abuse my power just yet.

Good to see you over here.

Bah. No sense being good. Spam the journals, start arguments, disagree with everyone just on principle. It's a blast.
