The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Random Rant about poker

So a bunch of us got together to play some poker and watch the super bowl today. It was great. We did a real cheap game (5$ buy in) and kept it going for hours! (The football game was pretty good too!)

Anyway, the point of my rant is what happened at the end of the game... I suck at poker so I went out first... Another guy and I ended up putting another 5$ in later to play some more. Ruffian showed up late and bought in for 5$. At that time my buddy (We shall call him Robert), was dominating... He had most of the chips (probably about 25$)

After about an hour or so of Ruffian kicking some serious ass she and "Robert" were about even. Myself and the other guy who bought in twice were out again (Yeah, I suck at poker and got beat by my girlfriend )

So down from 5 people to 2 now... It goes back and forth for a while then Ruffian clearly starts to win. She's got almost all the chips... Now, get this, whenever we play we ALWAYS play till all but one are out! I pretty much thought it was a given...

SOOOOO, "Robert" decides (when he's down to about $5.15) that he's going to cash out. WHAT THE FUC|<!!!!!! If we didn't ALWAYS go until everyone was out then I wouldn't care... But since we always do, and when he was winning he had no qualm about taking our money, I was pretty ticked...

I wasn't even in the game anymore, I had been out and just dealing for a while now... "Robert" has the nerve to look at me and say "You guys" just won all this money so who cares if I don't bet my 5$ and break even...

Ruffian and I may be close, but we don't share bank accounts or even live together! I won't see any of that money unless she chooses to spend it on me. He then starts whinning about how he didn't even want to gamble tonight... (Yet he was the one who called people up to play poker and we had it at his house...)

It's not the money that pisses me off; I just can't believe he would do something so fuc|<ing lame!!!!

Does anybody else think I have a reason to be pissed or should I just chill?

Well I'm actully a poker fanatic and a really good player if I may toot my own horn. There are two types of games, cash and tourney. Cash games is where you buy in for x amount and get that same amount of chips, you guys kept rebuying in which is what happens in cash games, so I'll assume thats what you rplaying. Cash games don't have to be winner take all, you can just get up and cash out whenever you want.
There are such things as rebuy tournies but doesn't sound like you guys would know what that is (plus there are rules to this, you can't just buy in anytime you want which is what you guys were doing so this isn't the kind of game you were playing) Think of it this way, if robert were to keep playing and go out, whats to stop him from buying in again with the format you were playing, many of you gusy rebaught in at random times.

Getting out while you're ahead is the only way to make any money, but it's lame in a 5 dollar game. We play no buy ins, no cashing out and usually just play casually(no "poker night") with 4 people.

Change the format of the game or say it upfront you can't withdraw your money in chips once on the table.

Playing a cash game, you should be able to get up and walk away any time you want. Considering the low stakes, it shouldn't even be an issue. My buddy's wife pulled the same **** a while ago. We played a $5 buyin tourney, which I won. Then we played a few rounds of dealers choice. My buddy's wife rebought 4 times, $5 each time. I had everybody elses buyins by that point, around $70, they all threw in the towel. Not her. She wanted me to keep playing so she could "win back" her money. Even got a little ugly when I called it over.

The point is, in a cash game one is free to get up and walk away whenever you want. Things can get ugly if you win quick and run but it is definitely a part of poker.

We play anywhere from 1-3 times a week, $5 buy in, sometimes second gets their money back, no buy-backs, no cash out. Lately we've had 11 people. We play three times last week, and I finished third, first, then second (wasn't ****ing disciplined enough). I love poker. I think cash outs are ****ing lame in lowstakes poker, but you've got to keep the rules consistent. If it's allowed when you start, then you've got nothing to complain about.

You're basically complaining because you felt he should have played how you were playing. Unless you state that at the beginning, he's free to cash out whenever he wants.

Everybody makes some good points. But for this instance, I have to agree with deeder that this was lame. Only because this was a game between friends and they clearly seem to have their own house rules, one which was broken by somebody who was finally getting their butt kicked. It reminds me of the pouters in basketball that don't get a call to go their way, so they threaten to take their ball and go home.

There are two things you can do deeder to keep this from happening in the future, and keep things friendly.

One would be to switch to a small tournament style (sit and go) and have one buy-in at an amount you can all agree on. No rebuys, and you pay out the top few positions based on how many players you have. For 10 or more players you should pay out the top 3 positions. 3rd gets their money back, 2nd doubles their money, and 1st takes the rest. If you have 9 or less players, then only have 2 payouts. 2nd doubles, 1st takes the rest.

Your other option, if you want to keep it a "friendly" cash game, is that any player who is up and wants to leave the table has to announce this 15 or 30 minutes before they leave. That will give everyone the chance to get a few bucks back, and if he is still up, or has even more money, nobody can complain. This keeps any player from winning a few huge hands in the first 15 minutes of play and then saying they want to call it a night, which would piss most people off.

Again, these are good formats for games between friends that will keep anybody from getting out of hand or upset about where the $$$ ends up.
Best way to cheat on deadlifts...

Stand there for a few minutes, then pace back and forth a lot, huff and puff, wait until everybody's looking. Approach the bar. Back off. Approach it again. Back off. Get some water. Chalk up. Approach the bar again. Then spray some more chalk around. Wait until people start losing interest. When nobody's looking, pick it a little off the floor, and slam it down. Jump up and yell "LIGHT WEIGHT BABY". Then give high fives all around. - Belial

The assumption here is that these rules were apparent and not implied. I play a game with friends now and again and we never have stated whether or not you play to tournament style or casino style. I agree with you if the rules were stated beforehand, but if a few people are just going to assume that everyone knows to play til they're out of money, then that's still everyone else's fault.

    Can't argue with that.

I think it's in everyone's best interest, with home poker games, to make sure everyone is clear on the rules before you start. It would eliminate confusion like what happened with deeder and Rufian. I always ask when I'm playing somewhere new, just so I know what to expect.

5 bucks!? It better not be about the money!

I'm hoping that I've got one of our biggest games ever tonight. Probably doesn't sound like much, but I may have as many as 15 people. That'd be tight. I'd love to win tonight, especially because there's a kid who's at least as good as me, if not better, playing. It is hard though, because everyone else is kinda gunning for us. I feel like I need to be very, very cautious with my betting and my bluffs, but I also know that I need to get some chips fairly quickly. Anyway, I'll probably come back to this thread and bitch or brag sometime tonight or early this morning. Wish me luck.
Had 12 people, I finished second. I played awesome throughout the game, but got undisciplined again. I wish the phrase "all in" could be removed from my vocabulary when I get heads up. Such a rookie mistake to make -- and the one time I make the mistake my opponent had flopped two pair, KK/QQ. Still, I've been very consistent lately, finishing 1st, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, the first three times out of 11 people and this time out of 12.

You need to make sure everyone understands what game your are playing before you begin. If it's a tournament, you either end up with all the chips or none.
