Ok I did a search but had trouble finding anything specific. I am tall, about 6'4", so what would be a respectable grip width for me. I tend to put my middle finger on the ring, which is very wide compared to some. Of course this has always worked for me in terms of mass and strength gains, but would it pass in a meet for example?
i dont think width matters in comp, but it targets muscles differently... ie. close grip is more tris and wider is more pecs. Do what works for you. I personally put my pinky on the ring, and im 5'8"

Edit: I like to feel like my pecs are stretching a bit, but too my stretching and they hurt afterwards.

i vary my grips up alot so usually either hand on the smooth part, pinky inside the ring, or index on the ring.
2000 or bust
I am 5'11 and I put 3 fingers outside the ring! i used to put my pinky on the ring but only my tris were growing. My bench as increased 10 lbs in a month just from moving my fingers out wider. At first you do less sometimes but your chest gets used to it.
usually pinkie or ring finger on ring...

i like variation so my grip is all over the place.. but the most comfortable for me would be a little wider than shoulder width.
