So i imagine these two methods of bicep curls use exactly the same muscles (maybe dumbells are slightly more effective on the shoulders?). So which one do you think works your biceps the best?

It'd be crazy for me to tell my former self, but I can't remember the last time I did a curl.
Don't ask for a lighter load. Ask for a stronger back.
I do chins and I do rows, but I still get in a few sets of curls every week.
My feeling is you should never use a barbell where dumbbells will work.
I agree with the above comments. You will probably grow bigger arms with more compound moves rather than isolated. Chin ups have become a huge part of my workouts.
But if you still like the Bb or Db methods they are pretty similar but Db's rule out cheating with the more dominant arm. I still do some preacher curls with Db's.
Im not trying to say Db's or Bb's are bad but try some chin ups and see what happens over a few weeks.
I personally gained 1/2" in my bi's in a month after starting to do chin ups.

More stabilizers get worked with dumbbells, plus it's isolateral.
You can't ALWAYS use dumbbells. I don't relish the thought of squatting 100 lb dumbbells, and there are times when it's nice to have more stability so you can concentrate more on the target muscle.
But if I have the choice between a dumbbell and a barbell movement, curls is a prime example, well, I'll use the dumbbell every time.

(lol ironically thats a Barbell and not a Bicep Curl, but im no smily artist okay! ) If i were to switch to chinups, should i do the same amount as i would dumbell (except not per arm, of course):-
twice a week (mondays, thursdays) : 5 sets, 8 reps each time

I never touch a barbell *anymore* as far as a bench is concenrned. But for curls I crank away on my biceps with the bar. For be out of any bicep excercise I feel that BB works them best. Of course it takes concentration and disipline not to swing or use forearm muscle. Get the form down they waste you . *at least for me, not everyone is the same*.
I prefer the BB for curls. I find grip an issue with dumbells because my palms get sweaty and my hand slides right against the top plate. The solution may be chalk or gloves, but I can't use chalk (gym rules) and I don't like gloves.

i do both but i feel them more on the e-z curl bar because i cant cheat as much lol.
I use seated alternating DB hammer curls. I love hammer curls.
BTW I only do 2 sets of hammer curls per week and I do it at the end of my back workout and in a slightly higher repetition range.

Bench- Two 100lbs DB's four times
190lbs 15% BF (Estimate)
I hate barbell curls.. they really hurt my elbows and wrists. An EZ curl bar is fine though.
Dumbell curls are fine and I can actually curl MORE with a dumbell (without cheating)
Cable curls are probably the best though since they offer full resistance for the whole range of motion. I finish off day 5 of WBB1 with a set of cable curls to really finish my arms off.
Not sure what you mean here: as many chinups as you would do a bicep curl? ...5 sets of 8 of chins is pretty tough for a lot of people. Chins are primarily a back exercise, but they do hit your bi's pretty hard.Originally Posted by mattyT

yeah i dunno about the cable curls. are you talking about high cables or low? i try the low ones and they honestly dont feel like they hit the bis as well as BB or DB... i dunno maybe its just me
I feel the muscle is extremely small and gets blasted with chins/rows anyways, so it really doesn't matter if you use cables or dumbells or barbell.
I do DB Alternating or EZ-Bar when I curl, which isn't often.

my biceps are pretty small but i could care less. they dont have anything to do with powerlifting so they are at the bottom of my list.
