Deadlifting & aftermath. Is extreme tiredness normal?

Well, I started deadlifting yesterday night. I did 5 sets, 5-6 reps each. First reps i started with 60 kgs, progessing so the 5th set was at 80 kgs. It was pretty tough for a first timer, but it felt good. The deadlift was the end of my back routine (3 excercises before it). Then I wanted to do some biceps. My arms didn't feel tired at all. They were normal... but when I tried bicep curling 20 kgs (which is the normal weight i lift, my standard), I couldn't even lift one rep! Then my whole body started hurting like hell, not the injury type of hurting, but the muscles iare hot kind of hurt. Legs, back, and most importantly, arms. Extreme tiredness. & those of you that have read my Capoeira thread, this week was basiclly CAPOEIRA-FREE... so i wasn't tired at all when i started to work out yesterday.

my question is: is that normal?? How many sets/reps should I do of deadlifts so I can continue with biceps (or any other excercise for the matter?)

    thanks!

    Probably normal.

I feel completely knackered after a good few sets of deads. If you're going heavy, it really takes everything out of you. 5x5 deadlifts is particularly brutal I think.

I only do them once a week for this reason.

Honestly, I wouldn't cut down on deads so that you can do more bicep curls. Deads will be FAR FAR more beneficial for your size and strength goals than curls will be. Besides, if you had done 3 other back exercises (i assume pullups, rows etc) then your biceps have already been hit pretty hard.

The back exercises definently hit your arms pretty hard.

I do 2 or 3 short sets of curls after my back workout to finish them off but it probably isn't necessary.

Deads kill me for a good week when I do them heavy. I would never do any direct arm work on a deadlift day.

They call them deadlifts because you feel dead after lifting.

    har har.

    ok maybe not.
me: so this is the "pump" you speak of
me: I could never figure out what people were talking about

Yeah I always wondered why they were called deadlifts. Maybe because you go through the motion of looking like a person rising from the dead or something.

Anyway I've been doing deads for a good year and last week I went up 10lbs (first time lifting that much) and took a rest that was shorter than normal due to time constraints and I could hardly walk around afterward. Felt like I was going to vomit and my back was ridiculously sore in almost any position. I had to go to the stretching mats and lie down for a few minutes before I could walk out of the gym.

dead lifts = lifting dead weight (from the floor).

That makes sense. So much for my zombie-like imaginative idea.

or may be this is how they pick up dead bodies back in the days.

    but
dead lifts = lifting dead weight (from the floor). that sounds good too.
